Bush OKs nuclear deal with Turkey

Thursday, January 24, 2008
President George W. Bush has green-lighted a civilian nuclear cooperation deal with Turkey, saying that private-sector proliferation worries have been addressed, the White House said Wednesday.

The Turkish government has already announced plans to build a multi-billion dollar nuclear energy sector to help reduce the nation's dependency on the use of imported natural gas and oil.

U.S. energy giants are among Western companies vying for Turkish contracts.

Bush said in his message that his administration was prepared to begin immediate consultations with the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the House Foreign Affairs Committee as part of the congressional approval process.

The agreement was originally signed in July 2000, winning the backing of then president Bill Clinton, Bush added.

But "immediately after signature, U.S. agencies received information... implicating Turkish private entities in certain activities directly relating to nuclear proliferation. Consequently, the agreement was not submitted to the Congress," Bush said in his message to Congress

US President George W Bush says he still has not ruled out the option of using force against Iran, after it resumed work on its nuclear programme.

He said he was working on a diplomatic solution, but was sceptical that one could be found.
http://www.iht.com/articles/2007/10/17/asia/prexy.php
The United States has said it is pursuing a diplomatic approach to Iran, including the threat of a new round of United Nations sanctions, but has refused to rule out military action to halt Iran's nuclear program, which it believes might be used covertly to develop nuclear weapons....

But in Tehran on Tuesday, Putin said, "Not only should we reject the use of force, but also the mention of force as a possibility."

Asked Wednesday about photos that showed a seemingly cordial meeting in Tehran between Putin and President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Bush said he was loath to read too much into photographs and wanted to hear Putin's own "readout" of the meeting.

Proposed new UN sanctions against Iran, pressed in particular by the United States and France, have so far been blocked by Russia, which holds a veto on the Security Council and wants further dialogue with Tehran.

But Putin has gone further, questioning what evidence the Americans and French have for asserting that Iran intends to make nuclear weapons.

When President Nicolas Sarkozy of France visited Putin in Moscow early this month, Putin said: "We don't have information showing that Iran is striving to produce nuclear weapons. That's why we're proceeding on the basis that Iran does not have such plans."

So Turkey was guilty of nuclear proliferation and was not long in being rewarded. Iran may? proliferate in the undetermined future, so they are about to be blown to kingdom come? Nice hypocrisy George, nice. Nice coverage U.S. media, nice.

Thanks for this juxtaposition of facts, SwissM... Does indeed look like a two-faced approach.

(Humor time: as the story goes, Pres. Lincoln was accused of being two-faced. He replied: "If I were two-faced, do you think I'd use this one?" )
