The Two Gospels???

Post by Gideon »

There are 24 references to the Everlasting Gospel in the scriptures, 22 are in the D&C, here are a few that you might find interesting:

25 I marveled, for I understood that the Savior spent about three years in his ministry among the Jews and those of the house of Israel, endeavoring to teach them the everlasting gospel and call them unto repentance;
(Doctrine and Covenants 138:25)

34 He said there was a book deposited, written upon gold plates, giving an account of the former inhabitants of this continent, and the source from whence they sprang. He also said that the fulness of the everlasting Gospel was contained in it, as delivered by the Savior to the ancient inhabitants;
(Joseph Smith—History 1:34)

5 Behold, this is wisdom in me; wherefore, marvel not, for the hour cometh that I will drink of the fruit of the vine with you on the earth, and with Moroni, whom I have sent unto you to reveal the Book of Mormon, containing the fulness of my everlasting gospel, to whom I have committed the keys of the record of the stick of Ephraim;
(Doctrine and Covenants 27:5)

17 And again, in connection with this quotation I will give you a quotation from one of the prophets, who had his eye fixed on the restoration of the priesthood, the glories to be revealed in the last days, and in an especial manner this most glorious of all subjects belonging to the everlasting gospel, namely, the baptism for the dead; for Malachi says, last chapter, verses 5th and 6th: Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord: And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.
(Doctrine and Covenants 128:17)

Jesus taught the Everlasting Gospel, the fulness of which is contained in the Book of Mormon, and one of its more glorious doctrines is the baptism of the dead.
===========================

The only reference in all of the scriptures to the Preparatory Gospel:

25 Therefore, he took Moses out of their midst, and the Holy Priesthood also;
26 And the lesser priesthood continued, which priesthood holdeth the key of the ministering of angels and the preparatory gospel;
27 Which gospel is the gospel of repentance and of baptism, and the remission of sins, and the law of carnal commandments, which the Lord in his wrath caused to continue with the house of Aaron among the children of Israel until John, whom God raised up, being filled with the Holy Ghost from his mother’s womb.
(Doctrine and Covenants 84:25–27)

The preparatory gospel consists of repentance, baptism, the remission of sins, and the law of carnal commandments. The law of carnal commandments is the only thing that the Lord let continue "in his wrath", the rest has been around since Adam, who was baptized in water by the Spirit because there was no other mortal with priesthood to perform the physical ordinance.

The law of carnal commandments is the law of Moses. Rigid rules and regulations designed to govern those who couldn't walk in the Spirit and govern themselves.

EDIT
I liked your definition. This is how I worded it when I added it to my scripture notes. :)

19 And this greater priesthood administereth the gospel and holdeth the key of the mysteries of the kingdom, even the key of the knowledge of God.

20 Therefore, in the ordinances thereof, the power of godliness is manifest.

21 And without the ordinances thereof, and the authority of the priesthood, the power of godliness is not manifest unto men in the flesh;

22 For without this no man can see the face of God, even the Father, and live.

23 Now this Moses plainly taught to the children of Israel in the wilderness, and sought diligently to sanctify his people that they might behold the face of God;

24 But they hardened their hearts and could not endure his presence; therefore, the Lord in his wrath, for his anger was kindled against them, swore that they should not enter into his rest while in the wilderness, which rest is the fulness of his glory.

25 Therefore, he took Moses out of their midst, and the Holy Priesthood also;

26 And the lesser priesthood continued, which priesthood holdeth the key of the ministering of angels and the preparatory gospel;

Such a great section!

I think from this we can see that Faith, Repentance, Baptism, Gift of the Holy Ghost, without then continuing on to seek the mysteries of the kingdom and seeking to obtain the key of the knowledge of God is a form of the Preparatory Gospel or Lessor Priesthood.

The Gift of the Holy Ghost is a MP ordinance, so I wouldn't include it with the Lesser priesthood. But one can get stuck on lower levels, especially if they start out with the idea that it must take a life time to reach the higher levels. This reminds me of something that surprised me when I was reading D&C 88:1-5. Everyone referenced in those verses was a member of the church for less than three years.
