I don't believe true prophets lie and lead the church astray their whole life or publish false scriptures, for any reason.

Who could God get to have faith and trust in 'true' Prophets if they could be lying about anything for some reason?

Life was very complicated and difficult in those days. When one spends any kind of significant time studying church history, that much becomes abundantly clear.

In light of the circumstances at the time, it does not alter my esteem for Joseph as a prophet. He had his reasons. I think it shows that prophets aren't perfect, and that the Lord does not require perfection of them or us. He does want perfect devotion, and I think Joseph had that.

Actually as I read church history, I think Joseph was very consistent and clear, it was the members who kept diverting and not listening to his warnings and the scriptures, that caused much of the trouble.

The Gospel that Joseph taught was very plain and simple to understand and follow.

To have the guidance of the Holy Spirit and receive revelation and scripture from God, let alone to see angels, Christ and God the Father, true Prophets have to be pretty close to perfect.

At least we can agree on that much.
