The story seems to me to be quite abbreviated. He probably did, but didn't mention it. Nephi didn't mention it, either. Moses most definitely did. Perhaps some of those who recorded their stories thought that the confrontation with darkness was not important enough to put in their record (or, perhaps, they put it in a record we do not have).
If you think about it, it is possible that Nephi did. The first thing he prayed for was for his heart to be softened, which could be what we are talking about.
