Who is watching? As I cancelled cable TV, I am watching it online. Donald L. Hallstrom's talk really resonated with me. Paraphrasing: "Activity in the church is not the ultimate goal. We need to be active in the gospel."

I love Paul E. Koelliker's talk. He drew greatly from the Book of Mormon.

"And it came to pass that I, Nephi, being exceedingly young, nevertheless being large in stature, and also having great desires to know of the mysteries of God, wherefore, I did cry unto the Lord; and behold he did visit me, and did soften my heart that I did believe all the words which had been spoken by my father; wherefore, I did not rebel against him like unto my brothers."

I could write a book on this verse alone.

It is a great one to quote when someone says we should just "believe" and not seek the deeper understandings and mysteries of God and His creation.

Fiannan, perhaps, though there are 6+ billion people who don't even know the truth because they "know not where to find it."

Dallin H. Oaks:

(Where the cross is the symbol in other faiths) The symbol of our faith is our lives. Sacrifice is a key word in his talk. This really causes me to reflect on my life. It's definitely going to be different for everyone.

Henry B. Eyring

We can endure our trials through faith.

7 And if thou shouldst be cast into the pit, or into the hands of murderers, and the sentence of death passed upon thee; if thou be cast into the deep; if the billowing surge conspire against thee; if fierce winds become thine enemy; if the heavens gather blackness, and all the elements combine to hedge up the way; and above all, if the very jaws of hell shall gape open the mouth wide after thee, know thou, my son, that all these things shall give thee experience, and shall be for thy good.

8 The Son of Man hath descended below them all. Art thou greater than he?

9 Therefore, hold on thy way, and the priesthood shall remain with thee; for their bounds are set, they cannot pass. Thy days are known, and thy years shall not be numbered less; therefore, fear not what man can do, for God shall be with you forever and ever.

I'd beg to differ! It was directed all at me! Hehe.

Great thread guys... it was an awesome morning conference! I watched it online too because I don't have cable/satellite and I don't think it's broadcast locally. LOVED every minute of it!

The Spirit was with him during this talk. No doubt about it. I had to get up and start moving about to avoid the dry spot coming up from my throat and causing tears to just flow.

The Church is true.

Amen! I love Dieter Uchtdorf! It was a joy listening to him carefully pronouncing everyone's name to be sustained. Jeffrey R. Holland's talk is also wonderful. Anyone know where this parable of the Householder is? I only find Matt 13:52, but not the story that Elder Holland recited.

Gordon H. Smith former US Senator from Oregon to serve as area GA

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gordon_H._Smith" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Gordon Smith, wiki:
... Smith is often described as politically moderate, but has strong conservative credentials as well. In a 2007 web video, Smith refers to "the values that make us Republicans, that make us conservatives".[14]

Smith is a member of the moderate Republican Main Street Partnership, and a February 2006 National Journal congressional rating placed Smith in the exact ideological center of the Senate.[15]

However, Smith is described as a moderate Republican by GovTrack.us,[16] and throughout 2006 Smith voted with Republican leader Bill Frist (TN) 82 percent of the time.[17] Based on five senate votes in 2006, the abortion rights advocacy group NARAL gave Smith a score of 15 percent on abortion rights (100 percent being a completely pro-choice score.)[18] For votes cast in 2006, Smith received a 14 percent rating from the League of Conservation Voters (out of a possible 100 percent).[19] Smith's votes have run contrary to widespread public sentiment[clarification needed] on several issues, notably minimum wage[20][21][22][23] and the Oregon Death with Dignity Act.[24]

... War in Iraq

In October 2002, Smith voted in favor of authorizing military force against Iraq, an important step in the run-up to the March 2003 invasion.[27] Smith was one of several Republican Senators for whom political concerns have clashed with party loyalty on the subject of the war in Iraq near an election year.[28]

In December 2006 Smith spoke out against the war for the first time, after having voted in support of it four years prior.[29] Smith said that to continue the current policy in Iraq "may even be criminal".[30]

Several weeks after stating his opposition to the occupation of Iraq, however, Smith declined to sign onto a bipartisan resolution to oppose Bush's plan to escalate troop levels in Iraq by 21,500,[31] prompting questions about the sincerity of his opposition to the continued US military presence in Iraq.[32] Smith cited the controversial nature of the word "escalate" in defending his choice. The bill's sponsors have since changed the word to "increase." Smith expressed support for the bill, but subsequently voted to prevent it from being debated by the full Senate.

In March 2007, Smith was one of only two Republicans to vote for a resolution aimed at withdrawing most American combat troops from Iraq in 2008, the other being Chuck Hagel of Nebraska. The vote was 50 for to 48 against.[33] Smith said in July 2007 that he would vote for a bill authorizing a timeline in which to leave Iraq. He was one of three Republican senators, the other two being Hagel and Olympia Snowe of Maine, to support the Levin Amendment (S.AMDT.2085) to the 2008 Defense Authorization bill (H.R.1585) that would begin a withdrawal of US forces from Iraq.[34]
[edit] Gay rights

Smith supported legislation expanding hate crime laws to encompass crimes against gays, and, with Senator Ted Kennedy, introduced such legislation in every Congress. As a result, he was one of a few Republican senators supported by gay rights groups in the United States, including the Human Rights Campaign. Smith also stood up in each Congress to talk about a separate hate crime as an illustration of why improved hate crime legislation was necessary, and had additional crimes published in the Congressional Record each day that Congress was in session.[35][36]

Gay rights groups have expressed disappointment at Smith's support for the Federal Marriage Amendment, which would define marriage as between a man and a woman.[37]

Leading up to the 2006 midterm elections, Smith joined Senate Democrats to introduce legislation that would guarantee homosexual employees of the federal government domestic partnership benefits.[38]

Ulisses Soares

Don't give up in a world where moral and ethical choices are becoming extinct. There is a line that separates being on the side of the Lord or on the side of Satan. We are safe as long as we are on the Lord's side. As soon as wee step over an inch to Satan's side, we give ourselves up to temptation and reason where the Spirit withdraws its influence.

"You can't do right by doing wrong. You can't do wrong by doing right." He quoted Pres. Monson.

Short Bio:
Ulisses Soares (born 2 October 1958) has been a general authority of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) since April 2005.

Soares was born in São Paulo, Brazil, the son of Apparecido and Mercedes Carecho Soares. His family joined the LDS Church when he was about five. As a young man, Soares served as a Mormon missionary in the Brazil Rio de Janeiro Mission.

Soares received a bachelor's degree in accounting and economics from Pontificia Catholic University in Brazil. Prior to his call as a general authority, Soares was employed as the director of temporal affairs for the Brazil South Area of the LDS Church. He had worked for Pirelli Tire Company but was convinced by Donald L. Clark to take a job as a senior auditor for the church. After Clark was called as a mission president, Soares replaced him as director of temporal affairs.

In 1995, Soares served as the first president of the São Paulo Brazil Cotia Stake.[1] Soares served as the president of the Porto Portugal Mission from 2000 to 2003.

In 2005, Soares became a member of the LDS Church's First Quorum of the Seventy.

Soares is married to Rosana Fernandes Morgado, who he initially met when they were both missionaries in the Brazil Rio de Janeiro Mission. They have three children.

Quentin L Cook short bio:
Born in Logan, Utah, Cook is among three children of Bernice Kimball and J. Vernon Cook. He is a great-great grandson of LDS Church apostle Heber C. Kimball and great-grandson of David Patten Kimball.

From 1960 to 1962, Cook served as an LDS Church missionary to England, where he and Jeffrey R. Holland served as companions.[1] After his return, he married his high school sweetheart, Mary Gaddie, in the Logan Utah Temple on November 30, 1962. He graduated from Utah State University in 1963 with a bachelor's degree in political science and from Stanford Law School in 1966.

The Cooks moved to Hillsborough, California, where they had three children. Cook worked for 27 years as a corporate attorney, becoming a managing partner of Carr, McClellan, Ingersoll, Thompson and Horn in the San Francisco Bay area; for three years as president and chief executive officer of California Healthcare System (CHS); and then for some time[citation needed] as vice chairman of Sutter Health System. [2] Cook also volunteered for 14 years as city attorney

No but, I seem to recall him saying that there are those who try to explain that away miss the point and end up losing faith. Something to that effect.

Quentin L Cook:

-Awaken fully to faith
-Refrain from judging others
-Rescue those who have fallen away and those still seeking
-Hold fast to the iron rod
-Read the Book of Mormon and the scriptures with family
