The old Soviet Union had a fine constitution that guaranteed all sorts of freedoms to it's people. They had freedom of speech, the press, religion and the right to democratically elect their representatives: ON PAPER!

In reality the central government had absolute power!

It's very clear that we are drifting towards the same situation. The only real difference is that our central government is tightly allied with the huge mega-corporations that now dominate the business world.

Look at how the Democrats don't even bother putting up any real opposition to Bush's vastly unpopular agenda. We have one ruling political party now - the Corporatist Federal party that has a wacko religious wing and a somewhat secular wing. And the Courts are packed with Federalist judges so there is no check at all on the growth of central power.

Where will it all lead? Who knows exactly. But I'm pretty sure it will not lead to anyplace pleasant unless you are wealthy and well-connected.
I confess my ignorance and ask: did the Soviets have these rights on paper?

I do not know, but I would not be surprised.

As I hear about those in Great Britain that try to uphold their laws that bring them freedom and can't because the EU laws take precedence and void their laws taht give protection of liberty.

YES, they did...as recently as 1977, but again...only on paper.

Contrast to today. I have read several commentaries this last year 2007, where it was stated that under Putin, ALL of the new rights obtained with the fall of the USSR have been removed.
:(

Ironically, their is ONE right remaining to the Russian people, which has gone un-noticed & unmolested for now, and that is freedom of religion. At least our missionaries can operate with reasonable safety & freedom...for now.

I am anxious to see what divine influence the Kiev Ukraine temple will have on the area when dedicated. :)
