$170,000 per year to create legislation and pass laws! Amazing. Congressmen and Senators are supposed to be receiving modest compensation for their "services". Is $170k modest? Hardly.
Of note: During the Constitutional Convention, Benjamin Franklin considered proposing that elected government officials not be paid for their service. Other Founding Fathers, however, decided otherwise. From 1789 to 1815, members of Congress received only a per diem (daily payment) of $6.00 while in session. Members began receiving an annual salary in 1815, when they were paid $1,500 per year.
193 years later, that figure has gone up 11,333% (or 58.7% annually). I only get 3% per year where I work. No wonder politicians haven't cared if real inflation is 15-20% per year... they still came out ahead by 40%!

The article posts that they got a 2.5% increase not quite a 58.7% raise. But I hear what your saying.
I hate paying people to screw things up.

Their incomes are WAY above the Median incomes of the US people. If they were getting the Median they would care more, I am certain of that.

I know, the $4,000 was a 2.5% increase compared to last year, but over the last 190 years, the average, per year, has been 58%.

Absolutely right Col.
The other point is that they have such a low approval rating and then they give themselves (by a law they created) a raise. That's crazy. If I had that approval rating I would be out of work. They really should be locked into the median income, if anything. LoveChrist is right on.

I totally agree with you and LC. I was listening to a local radio show a few months ago and they were interviewing someone who knows all the perks and luxurious lifestyles the politicians in Washington live (not just at home, but in their DC offices). It's beyond a joke. Did you know that each one of them has their own Curator for the artwork in their offices and that fleets of limousines were purchased for all of them to travel around Washington in? And this is just the tip of the icerberg. These jackasses are living off the spoils of the taxpayers... simply incredible. What really infuriated me a few years ago was when I discovered that a full-fledge gymnasium was built for all of the Utah State Legislators, with a day spa, saunas... the works, all while state employees were being told that because of the olympics, there wouldn't be enough money for any cost of living increases for two years. Our government is beyond out of control and thriving on corruption, on both the state and federal levels. The only way it is going to come to an end is by divine intervention.

Don't forget about all the prostitution in Washington and the State houses! Paid for in part (or wholly) by the fine people of this country.

Hel. 6: 38
38 And it came to pass on the other hand, that the Nephites did build them up and support them, beginning at the more wicked part of them, until they had overspread all the land of the Nephites, and had seduced the more part of the righteous until they had come down to believe in their works and partake of their spoils, and to join with them in their secret murders and combinations.
Revelation
4 And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.
5 For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities.
6 Reward her even as she rewarded you, and double unto her double according to her works: in the cup which she hath filled fill to her double.
7 How much she hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously, so much torment and sorrow give her: for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow.
8 Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her.
9 And the kings of the earth, who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with her, shall bewail her, and lament for her, when they shall see the smoke of her burning,
10 Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.
11 And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her; for no man buyeth their merchandise any more:
12 The merchandise of gold, and silver, and precious stones, and of pearls, and fine linen, and purple, and silk, and scarlet, and all thyine wood, and all manner vessels of ivory, and all manner vessels of most precious wood, and of brass, and iron, and marble,
13 And cinnamon, and odours, and ointments, and frankincense, and wine, and oil, and fine flour, and wheat, and beasts, and sheep, and horses, and chariots, and slaves, and souls of men.
14 And the fruits that thy soul lusted after are departed from thee, and all things which were dainty and goodly are departed from thee, and thou shalt find them no more at all.
15 The merchants of these things, which were made rich by her, shall stand afar off for the fear of her torment, weeping and wailing,
16 And saying, Alas, alas, that great city, that was clothed in fine linen, and purple, and scarlet, and decked with gold, and precious stones, and pearls!
17 For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off,
18 And cried when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, What city is like unto this great city!
19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas, that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.

Good point. I was really hoping that DC Madam (Jean Palfrey) was going to expose all of her Washington, DC 'Clients', but that whole story just suddenly died months ago.
