The purpose of this article is not to denigrate the Baptist Church, or the Southern Baptist Convention. However, Pastor Jeffress’ claims simply do not bear up well under scrutiny. First, let’s take each element of the above definition as it pertains to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints:

I think Pastor Jeffress needs to learn more about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Everything he spouted was general ignorance of the Church. Even I was able to counter his arguments.

Lots of discussion on the airwaves right now -- Are Mormons Christian?

Listening the radio while driving, the radio guy said No, saying that a mainstream Christian church (Baptists) have the right to DEFINE what is Christian and what is a cult. A caller said she was an ex-Mormon but still defended the LDS Church as Christian and not a cult.

Also on GMA and Today show today -- but not ONCE have I heard the FULL name of the Church used... always the "MORMON Church".
Opportunities for some missionary work ;)

I'm going to start spending less time here and more time on other religious websites proclaiming the gospel as we were advised to do in GC - what a great way to spread the gospel truth!

The word Mormon is not what we are, never was. We are latter day Saint members of the restored church of Jesus Christ.

The real definition of a cult: Any religion that you don't like that you want to make sound bad and scary to other people so they will stay away from it and stay ignorant of it.

Good missionary opportunity. It's always sadly humorous when ardent adherents to the Christian creeds call us cults. There are none so blind as those whose light is darkness.

But, I hope that Protestants that are honest in heart won't be led astray by the lies and distortions of prominent men.

Isn't it funnny that in Gen conf, we were told that we need to get back to the name of the chruch, and get rid of the "nicknames" that we have been given. That was on Sun, and look what happend in that same week. Makes you realize who's in control, and who is in tune with the spirit. Yes it will be a good lead into missionary work, what they don't understand is that when they make such comments it only makes people more interested in the church.

+1 million!
We indeed have real prophets and apostles of the Lord Jesus Christ leading His church under direct revelation. They hold all the keys and those keys don't have a speck of rust on them!

I noted this on the blog, but worth repeating...
1) Formal religious veneration – Guilty as charged. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints worships the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, as well as His only begotten son and our Savior, Jesus Christ.
Jesus is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

“And the God of our fathers, who were led out of Egypt, out of bondage, and also were preserved in the wilderness by him, yea, the God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, yieldeth himself, according to the words of the angel, as a man, into the hands of wicked men, to be lifted up, according to the words of Zenock, and to be crucified, according to the words of Neum, and to be buried in a sepulchre, according to the words of Zenos.” 1 Ne 19:10

“For the fulness of mine intent is that I may persuade men to come unto the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, and be saved.” 1 Ne 6:4

“Come unto Christ” see Omni 1:26, and Moroni 10:32

Oxford Dictionary definition of 'cult':

1 a system of religious veneration and devotion directed towards a particular figure or object

relatively small group of people having religious beliefs or practices regarded by others as strange or as imposing excessive control over members

a misplaced or excessive admiration for a particular thing

2 a person or thing that is popular or fashionable among a particular group or section of society
We do have religious veneration and devotion towards a particular figure and we are a relatively small group of people having religious beliefs which are regarded as strange. I don't think that the Church imposes excessive control over members - maybe excessive influence?

The problem is not with the label 'cult' but more to do with the ignorance of the people who use the label 'cult' when they probably have no idea what it actually means.

We have to remember that others are very aware of our labelling them as apostates and churches without authority or the fulness of the gospel.

I guess we'll just have to live with the label like we have for decades. 8-|

I think those like Pastor Jeffress know exactly what they're doing. They feel threatened by the church, or IOW, they feel their priestcraft is threatened. By labeling the Church as they have, they hope to keep their members (source of income) from straying.

Jeremy Paxman interviews Pastor Jeffress on BBC. I couldn't help laugh at the way Pastor Jeffress attempted to defend himself. He even says that when he referred to the LDS church as a cult he meant that it was a "theological cult." :-?
