Article: A Fresh Take on the Word of Wisdom
http://oneclimbs.com/2011/10/05/a-fresh ... of-wisdom/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Ok guys, I've published a new article today addressing the topic of the Word of Wisdom with an emphasis on the subject of consuming animal flesh in particular. A lot of thoughts I've been having over the years just kind of came together. I wrote it so that I can have the information available to help family and friends and I'm posting it here because many of you are like-minded and might find the references and quotes useful in your own studies and discussions with others.
As always, I love to hear feedback on if I have made any errors or if I have left out any significant information that you guys might have on hand. Enjoy!

Re: Article: A Fresh Take on the Word of Wisdom
I like your article. I would consider reading "Word of WIsdom, a modern interpretation" by John Widstoe and Leah Widstoe. They actually took it a lot farther than you imply it can be taken.

Re: Article: A Fresh Take on the Word of Wisdom
Good job! Especially recognising that it is unneccessary to be vegetarian. You might be interested to note that verse 15 is likely referring to verse 14 when it reads "all wild animals." There is an order to things, and at the very bottom are all the "unclean" animals, or "wild animals." These should only be consumed in absolute dire circumstances to save our lives. Brigham Young gave insight to this when he counseled the saints to avoid the pigs and eat the meat of the cows that were out eating grass. The beasts of the fields are better for regular use.
I liked how you thought about the constitution and nature of man. That was a good angle. Another angle to think about, is individually. We all have different constitutions, so we should eat according to our own constitutions. Some may have low ureas, hypglycemic, and defiecient in certain minerals and require more sugars and meat to build their bodies up. Look into RBTI by Carey Reams if you want to learn more about knowing what to do for your particular constitution and body chemistry. I'm studying and following this now and it is an answer to prayers because I don't have to just guess anymore, I can run a few simple tests myself and know exactly what my chemistry is and how to fix it. It's fascinating reading his book Choose Life or Death-it's very in line with all the health info we've learned from WoW and scriptures.
I agree that Widstoe's books are excellent.

It was well done. However it would have been a bit more informative with a little more information dealing with the "consequences of evils and designs which do and will exist in the hearts of conspiring men in the last days." What I'm referring to is the splenda, high fructose corn syrup, aspartame, and the big pharma drugs which in the long run do more harm than good.

Well done Stev3, I agree with your premises, I like the beginning of the article, and looking to the earliest counsel on diet, I had never seen that before. I think this is such a valuable course of study, discipline and pondering. I thoroughly believe we can accurately view our body as our own personal Liahona. Another interesting way to take this is prescription drugs and infections: that they are one of God's creatures that fulfill the measure of their creation as well as do all of God's other creatures. If we get an infection, it is just the way things are suppose to be, given our desires; because God gives unto the children of men according to their desires.

Re: Article: A Fresh Take on the Word of Wisdom
I don't think eating meat is necessarily the problem. It is the amount of meat and when it is eaten that may be taken into consideration here.
See Proverbs 31:15. Meat is to be eaten early in the morning to 'break the fast' or breakfast. Most Americans especially men will eat a large steak with all the trimmings
late in the evening then retire to bed an hour later. This is devastating to the colon.
Also of note is the different body types and the protein requirement of those body types. It is just not one size fits all. I suggest the Law of Moses states it
all with TWO whole chapters on protein, what meats should be consumed and what meats shouldn't. We are not to consume scavenagers like shrimp,
crab, pork, lobster, rattlesnake, rats, rabbits, bear, dog, ....you get the picture. Brigham Young talked about not eating swine in his Journal of Discourses page 189 upper
paragraph.
White processed sugar is deadly. It is highly addictive and not good for the body. IMO.... processed, pasteurized, homogenized, DEAD milk is awful too.
Seriously how can ANYONE drink that stuff especially the 1%? Milk is not the only 'fractured' food that is being peddled in the grocery stores. No wonder
there are so many folks with cancer, diabetes, arthritis and other diseases.
Then there are the soda pops with or without sugar and caffiene. A friend of mine and a convert to the church once stated, "The only difference between
an active and and INactive Mormon is the temperature of the caffiene."
Time for me to get down off my soapbox before I fall.

Re: Article: A Fresh Take on the Word of Wisdom
I posted a link to it on Facebook, and it was a hit with several of my friends. You raise some interesting points. Of course, you weren't trying to write the end-all discourse on the subject, but what you did write was enlightening and helpful. I've even tried to change my eating behavior the past few days as a result.
I've been eating on the floor of a wood shack in rural Cambodia, so I've tried to balance being gracious to my hosts with eating less meat and sugar. Luckily, the family I've been staying with doesn't use MSG in their cooking and they have tailored meals at my request to include more vegetables and a little less meat and white rice.
P.S. -- The exotic fruits here are awesome. All kinds of interesting things to try.

An RBTI rule is no meat or sweets after 2:00 p.m. Also someone good at reading the numbers will be able to tell if you ate pork or other unclean meats. The proof is in the numbers! They can also tell if you ate too heavily (meat/sweets) in the evening. It's been very interesting learning all this.blondenblueeyed wrote:I don't think eating meat is necessarily the problem. I'm curious... Referencing D&C 89:17 what was the mild barley drink spoken of? I've heard some theories, but am looking more for historical facts relating to the 1830's not our modern assumptions.

I had heard that barley was the most nutritious of the grains, that the Roman armies were fueled by barley, that if the barley was added to a canteen of water and soaked... that drinking the uncooked sweet soak water was full of living enzymes and nutritious, that beer was also made of barley soak but decomposed into an alcoholic adulterated counterfit barley drink,I'm curious... Re: Article: A Fresh Take on the Word of Wisdom
The Word Of Wisdom puts foods in a toxic order:
Fruits & Veggies w/prudance and thanksgiving.
Grains when hungry or excessively hungry.
Meat when cold winter or famine.
Alcohol to used outside the body, not to be used inside the body but for cleaning...
Tobacco to used outide the body, for bruses...in cattle.
A toxin in the body attracts water like a sliver attracts pus.
Toxic foods cause thirst. (to insulate, dissolve, flush out the toxic particulates from the body)
Toxic foods cause swelling (edema/pus/post nasal drip/allergies/coughing/sweating)
Swelling causes oxygen depravation or carbonation of cellular tissues...(asphyxiation/drowning of cells)... causing weakness.
Knowing foods in toxic order helps "the weak and the weakest of saints, who are or can be called saints".
Given for a principle if practiced shall receive health in their navel and marrow to their bones,
finding wisdom, great treasures of knowledge, even hidden treasures, running and not being weary walking and not fainting.
With the promise: the destroying angel shall pass by them, as the children of Israel, and not slay them.

Knowing foods in toxic order gives us a clue to the cause of disease:
... disease in their navel and bones;
And shall find foolishness and great treasures of disinfo, even hidden disinfo;
And shall run and be weary, and shall walk and faint.
And I, the Lord, give unto them a promise, that the destroying angel shall visit them... and slay them.
Conspiring men (with evil and designs in their hearts in the last days) would tell you that you have lack and need... that you have a lotion, or potion, or vaccine, or pill, or treatment, surgical, or radiological deficiency... that he has been to college, trained in great learning and licenced to provide ...for a small fair fee of course.
The last thing conspiring money hungry men in the last days are going to tell you is to fast... to become internally clean...it costs nothing...8 ¶ Then shall thy light would break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy rereward. 6 Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go bfree, and that ye break every yoke? Isaiah 58:1, 8
'Some foods are more cleansing/healing than other foods...hunger as therapy is faster... thirst as therapy is even...mmm...we can go there another time..

Re: Article: A Fresh Take on the Word of Wisdom
I am always grateful to discuss these topics with you guys, there are always great comments.
Thanks for understanding that it is not an all-inclusive article. The focus is mainly on the consuming of flesh. I have recently come across some additional information that I am figuring out how to include.
I won't argue the point further on the consuming of flesh or meat. I believe the scriptures, especially MODERN revelation pertaining to the last days is clear enough; for me at least.
I was only hoping to explore the topic scripturally for a core understanding of principle so then, one could contemplate the application of the principle.
There is certainly much more to the Word of Wisdom. Penalties are certainly there, but I find myself and others more motivated by solutions and the blessings promised. My blog IS titled ONEclimbs in that it's mostly a reflection of how I currently understand a topic. Since I try to understand things on the level of principle, I feel that the content could be useful in sparking ideas for others.
Your feedback helps me to refine my thoughts.

Re: Article: A Fresh Take on the Word of Wisdom
Also, the Law of Moses doesn't apply entirely to our day, we've been given new instruction concerning the consumption of flesh/shedding of blood.
Protein IS a factor in our biology. It is a fact that all the protein you need for survival can be found in plants. You actually need zero animal protein for survival.
Have your read the China Study? If not, a good introduction would be the documentary "Forks Over Knives". It was discovered that certain kinds of cancer can be turned on or off by the introduction and deprivation of animal protein.

Ok, so I pondered more on the subject, did some additional research and found some new, shocking information that I have added to the article under the section "Animal protein as an addictive and carcinogenic substance". Let me know what you think!

You might also need to add another update... that Beer is the mild barley drink mentioned :-B ... I don't drink beer, and don't plan on starting, and am not encouraging ignoring the modern interpretation of the Word of Wisdom (and feel it wise to avoid beer regardless of whether it is or isn't forbidden by the WoW), but you might be surprised that the early saints, including Joseph Smith, knew certain things to mean something different than how we interpret it today...5tev3 wrote:Ok, so I pondered more on the subject, did some additional research and found some new, shocking information that I have added to the article under the section "Animal protein as an addictive and carcinogenic substance". Let me know what you think!
“...Barley for all useful animals, and for mild drinks, as also other grain.” (D&C 89:17)
"To understand what the Lord meant by “mild drinks,” one must understand the entire context
of the revelation. First, “mild drinks” are made from grains, especially barley. Second,
“mild drinks” are juxtaposed to “strong drinks” in a previous verse. The only drinks that can
be logically construed to be “mild drinks” within this context are beers and ales. Those who
would balk at such a description believe that alcohol was prohibited in the Word of Wisdom
and, therefore, “mild drinks” could not possibly refer to beer or ale. But, as we have discussed
above, alcohol is nowhere prohibited. Indeed, alcohol in the form of “mild drinks” is
encouraged.
Historical records support this definition of “mild drinks.” Brigham Young once told a congregation
that beer was a “mild drink.” (Journal of Discourses, Vol.18, p.72, Brigham Young,
August 31, 1875) The prophet Joseph occasionally drank beer well after receiving the revelation,
known as the Word of Wisdom. For example, Joseph recorded in his diary that on 1
June, 1844, just prior to his martyrdom, he “...went to John P. Greene’s, and paid him and
another brother $200. Drank a glass of beer at Moessers. Called at William Clayton’s,...”
(Millennial Star, v. 231 p. 720)
In fact, Joseph had a liquor license to distribute from his
home, the Nauvoo Mansion, where he set up a fully-stocked bar with Orrin Porter Rockwell
as the bartender. (History of the Church, vol. 6, pg. 111) The church newspaper at the time,
The Nauvoo Neighbor, advertised ale and beer from the Nauvoo Brewery. (D. Michael
Quinn, The Mormon Hierarchy: Origins of Power, p. 641) The Twelve and others also drank
beer, as Hosea Stout recorded in his diary entry of April 12, 1845: “The Old police and wives
and some of the Twelve were present We had a joyful time as much cakes & beer as we could
eat and drink...” (On The Mormon Frontier, The Diary of Hosea Stout, v. 1, p. 34)

If it's shocking in the nutrition world it is more than likely not true. Yes, I've read just about every veg'n book out there, including all the ones you mentioned. They don't understand how the body chemistry works.
I highly doubt that by conspiring men the Lord meant dairy or beef. More like the major addictive drugs and alcohol, tea and coffee, smoking and yes, chocolate. I'll give you that one. Chocolate will mess up your body chemistry, unfortunately. Almost up there with pork.
If someone thinks they are addicted to meat and cheese, they are certainly doing something wrong. Eaten correctly and sensibly they provide the body needed minerals.

When I said "new" I meant "new to me" sorry for the confusion. The fact is that conspiring men have worked across the spectrum to addict and disrupt the natural, healthy state of the body in order to promote their own causes the same way pornographers seek to addict people to their content via other natural processes.

Well you are free to go down that path, I just hate to see more people getting duped. It's not necessary. You make think it is clear in the way you want to interepret it. I was where you are in your interepretation once. I've been on this journey for a long time. The picture is getting clearer with not only using the word of wisdom, but all scripture and other resources.

Can you clarify what people are being "duped" on? I'm using the scriptures and words of modern prophets, if I am wrong, I would like to know where so I can update my information accordingly. I'm not a close-minded person, just someone who follows where the evidence leads.keeprunning wrote:Well you are free to go down that path, I just hate to see more people getting duped.
