Daniel C. Peterson Interview

Post by iamse7en »

Despite this being from Mormon Stories, this is a great, 4-hour interview with Daniel C. Peterson. It was a very interesting interview, and I think many of you would also find it interesting. Click the link to watch the videos or download as a podcast.

Topics covered:
Part 1: Upbringing; Mission to Switzerland; Marriage and Family; College in the U.S. and Middle East; Becoming an Islamist; Beginnings of Apologetics Career
Part 2: Middle Eastern Text Initiative, Three Witnesses and Golden Plates, Nature of Apologetics, Does FARMS Make Doctrine?
Part 3: Can Apologetics Help Those in Faith Crisis?, Pros and Cons of Being Seen as a Public Spokesperson, How FARMS came to BYU, Wishes for Improving Church Teaching, What Makes a Prophet a “Prophet,” Thoughts on Proposition
Part 4: Tough issues: Mormonism and Folk Magic, Joseph Smith Polyandry, Book of Abraham Translation, Endowment Inheritances from Masonry; Why Mormonism is Exciting

I served with Dan in a couple different capacities in the church and found him to be a great defender of the church and the gospel. He is a genuinely good guy.

Found it interesting that he doesn't care much for the "last days" as a gospel topic. He almost seems to pooh-pooh it. That's not atypical. Many intellectual Mormons can't wrap their heads around the concept, preferring or hoping as it were, that the Brethren would vindicate what they hope is a more abstract or symbolic understanding.
