17 Miracles

Post by marc »

If you live in Utah and one of your local theaters is showing it, I highly recommend it. Saw it yesterday with my wife and thoroughly enjoyed it. Lest we never forget.

Feel free to discuss the movie and/or anything about the Willie Martin Handcart Company.

Hello,

I saw the preview of it and I noticed there were wolves in it. I think in general wolves get blamed for more than they actually do. Wolves need to have a better pr system. Maybe something like I enjoy howling, running through the woods, and playing with other wolves. I am a wolf.

Now back to the movie.. I enjoyed watching it and felt it well worth the time. The one thing that irritated me was the heavy handed treatment given to Levi Savage by those church leaders in charge of the trek because of his dire warning to the Saints not to proceed with the trek because of the lateness of the season. It was utter stupidity for the Saints to try this trek at the time they did and Savage was just trying to warn them of what they would surely experience if they proceeded. To publicly disparage Savage for doing so as was done was inappropriate and just plain stupid. He was the only one with a lick of sense about him.

Yup...maybe just repeat things 3 times and then you'd definitely fit in.

Hey Mark those were my sentiments also. Then about 3/4ths of the way through the movie the impression came to me that it was a testing period for Levi and he bore it well. I also had the impression that these saints went through what they did for a reason, maybe their testing period. They bore it well also. Overall the movie was great and spirit filled.I think sometimes the Lord cuts us to the center and sees how we act or react to these situations. But I do agree with slob that the wolves get a bad rap.

This was the trial of their faith.

I can appreciate all those sentiments and agree that our trials are what give us growth. However just like those leaders who were warned at Hauns Mill the Lord will allow us to make stupid decisions and suffer consequences for our stupid actions. The guilt trip put on Levi Savage by the leaders because he was just being practical was just a form of unrighteous dominion to shame him into helping. Thank the Lord that he had the character to overlook their inappropriate scolding and still be willing to help those who suffered greatly as a result of these bad decisions.

If it was unrighteous dominion then amen to the priesthood power of those men and more blessings upon Levi for following his priesthood leaders even in adversity and who ultimately showed power in the priesthood. The Lord will iron out the wrinkles when all is said and done, until then we are learning even if it must needs be through suffering. Whom the Lord loveth the Lord chasteneth.

Agreed K. Far be it from me to cast stones. I apologize if it sounded as such.

No I didn't take it that way at all. I felt the same as you, like I said. I even felt a little angry with those leaders but then that impression came to me and my heart was softened. By the end of the movie I just thought how amazing and powerful Levi was. I was truly impressed with his integrity and humility. What a great man and example!

I like that K. Even though Levi was clearly wronged he did not allow that to cancer him in any way but maintained a humility and meekness that clearly brought out his greatness as a Priesthood holder of God. What a wonderful example for us all as we are faced with undeserved criticism from others.

Mark and Komyu, you two are making entirely too much sense and being so agreeable the rest of the forum won't know what to do with this thread. http://www.ldsfreedomforum.com/posting. ... 14&t=18980#" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I just met Levi's great granddaughter just fyi. I can see in her the kind of strength it would have taken to do what he did. I look forward to seeing the movie.

I REALLY enjoyed this movie.

I am a visual learner so it was great to put the story out there in movie form. I have family that trekked in that party so it was touching to see what all they went through. (Actually, it was my dad's family that came to rescue the party that my mom's family was a part of.)

I think the miracles that were portrayed were fascinating, and did not doubt that any of those things could/did happen - I especially liked the story of the mom that went off the trail with that man to get all the jerky and that her infant daughter never believed the story until she heard someone mention it in a meeting many years later.

I was concerned for Levi when he was being berated... a little over the top if you ask me, but it got me thinking about how they used to have people stand in Sacrament meeting if they were in any disciplinary actions (disfellowship, excommunicated, etc...)

I also think the Wolves got a bad wrap, actually I don't know why that was such a focus in the movie... oh well, I may just have to see that again to understand.

What I learned most was Levi Savages example, I don't think I would have been so Christlike after being publicly humiliated - helps me keep that in the fore front of my mind - to be more like him - what a great example. Also I realized we are really here to experience life - even to the bitter end, it's the way we treat others and the way we keep a positive attitude even in dire circumstances that matters.

Wolves get hungry - I had a wolf dog (hybrid wolf) sweetest thing in the world - unless you tried to get too close to his food! They will fight to the death!
