Agreed, tsc! In addition to that, strengthening our relationships...whether they be marriage, family, or the one we have with Christ and Heavenly Father should also be a priority. Although this sometimes can be a natural by-product of building up our testimonies of Christ and sharing that with others.tsc wrote:I would suggest that perhaps instead of worrying about our knowledge of polygamy, we need to focus on our testimonies of Christ. And then go out and share those testimonies of our Savior, and the Book of Mormon, with our neighbors, friends, family, or anyone else in our lives who is prepared to hear the truth.
The last time I checked there was no mention of polygamy in 'Preach My Gospel'.

Rick Perry just passed Romney at intrade, and he hasn't even declared yet. Don't see Romney winning...

TSC: what makes you think I and many others on LDSFF are not already doing this? IMO, you've missed the whole point: Romney will open up discussions of many of the Mormon's "crazy" ideas including plural marriage. This will intensify the level and depth of the questions and increase missionary work with the honest in heart.
Food for thought: Do you go out of your way to let everyone know you're a Mormon? Or do you just keep quiet about it? Why? People knowing you're a Mormon can cause problems ( I could realte some pretty horrible ones my wife and I have faced) but also leads to others asking questions. My wife and I have found in our member missionary work that we are chiefly the sowers: others are the reapers.
I know some here will charge me with tooting my own horn but here goes but I have been in the arena. That usually gets my critics seeing red. @-) .
I would say almost all the faculty at UNCP KNEW I'm a Mormon. When the Church put out that beautiful Christmas video a few years ago and begged us to share it with nonmembers, I made sure my Dean, my Provost, and the Chancellor received a copy from me face to face. I have passed out BofMs to anyone who showed any type of interest.
When my Dean had some serious illness problems, I explained to him about Priesthood blessings (he is very active in the Methodist Church) and asked if he would like the Elders to adminster to him. He accepted and was healed.
Another Professor NOT in my Dept but in the Political Science Dept, had badly damaged his ankel, the doctor said that it could cause long time damage. I saw him limping in the hallway and asked if he had a few minutes. We went into my office and I explained adminstration. He is a very dedicated Catholic. He said yes he would. I blesssed him that his ankel would totally heal.
I should say that previously to this I had given him a BofM and he read it from cover to cover. When he got to 2 Nephi he stepped into my office and said would I answer a question for him. I said ask away. He said that it appeared that the Great and Abominable Church was his own Catholic Church. What was I too say without offending him. Didn't have a chance to answer. He went on to say that many of the BofM words were exactly how the Catholic Church was in terms of history. I was aghast. I thought he was ready to take the lessons. never happened. I believe his many centuries of Catholic experience/tradition of men and his close nit family prevented him from converting.
Last thing, when I retired from the Businss College to go on the Nauvoo Mission, the faculty threw a going away party. A number of people in other Depts came. One was a person who he and I had some real head butting times in the faculty Senate and other places. Unlike TMAC, he knew my heart and showed up with his faculty wife. I was greatly touched. What touched me the most was that the Retirement cake said, "Good Luck ELDER SCHELL.
Now back to the blessing. He came back three days later without crutches and said thank you. A few months later he shared something with me that truly brought tears to my eyes. He said Doug when you put your hands on my head, I felt an electric type current go from the top of my head to my toes. I thought wow. I asked him if I could send him the Elders. He said no????
So I ask you as does the thread subject: "are you really ready to explain about Plural marriage and other crazy Mormon teachings." If not, are you following your own advive?

Re: Members better become experts at polygamy and fast!
A poor knowledge of Church history in general. As a convert, I initially thought I had to run to catch up with my knowledge of Church history and read quite a bit before I realized how little we, as a whole, remember. I can't say that that's good or bad, or if it's necessary to brush up just because yet another Mormon is in the limelight. I'm never asked the questions I'm prepared for anyway. :ymsigh: Watch... I'll study up on the history of polygamy, from the OT onward, and they'll just wind up asking me about salamanders, or Kinderhook, or something else unrelated. 8-|Fiannan wrote:It is my belief that most members have a very poor knowledge of history in regards to polygamy.

Rob: Your heart and committment to learning are right before God. Remember that when we seek knowledge as you're doing, that when the time comes for you to answer questions, the HG will place within your mouth the right words. Those members who choose to remain ignorant will never expereince that type of HG moment. The HG can't speak to an empty head; He brings things you've studied back to your memeory.
Keep up your dedication to learning.
