Don't know the year but during the Nauvoo period. Plural marraige became public knowledge during this time. Was very controversial withing the Church (Emma really got angry) and was a major cause for JS being murdered.

I doesn't seem that it was public knowledge in Nauvoo. I can't find anywhere where it was preached publically there. It seems it was only talked about & lived secretly. It seems there is no record of Joseph preaching about 132 publically to the Saints.

Historians say that it wasn't until the Saints were in Utah many years later, that Brigham Young presented D&C 132 to the Saints.

Perhaps, for there are many 'wive's tales' from that time period going around & believed by most members.
