gclayjr has a point here.

The Church IS more global than it was in the days of President McKay, or even Ezra Taft Benson.

In Mexico, where I live, there are 226 stakes. In 1960, when David O. McKay was president, there was only one stake in Mexico and it was English-speaking (the Colonies in Chihuahua).

Brasil, now with 250 stakes, had ZERO stakes.

Even in the days of President Ezra Taft Benson over two-thirds of the members were from the USA.

Now that number is down in the mid 40s and at this rate by 2020 there will be more members from Latin America than from the USA.

There are now more stakes OUTSIDE the USA than within the USA. That feat was accomplished in 2012.

The Constitution is important--for American members. Even for those outside of the USA, it is a great legal document to study.

I don't buy the line that the Church is going soft on the Constitution because it is more of an international church now.

According to statements in the Doctrine and Covenants and recorded statements especially of Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, Orson Pratt, John Taylor, Melvin J. Ballard, J. Reuben Clark, Harold B. Lee, and Ezra Taft Benson, it appears that God committed to Americans the task of learning and upholding the principles of the US Constitution as it was intended to be understood by the Lord such that by example those principles would reverberate to other nations where people would desire to live by its precepts and choose to be governed by them, and those principles would be established forever. That appears to have been the wish. In the years that I lived in European countries I noted that a few members there realized this better than most American Mormons.

Sadly, instead of the precepts of the US Constitution being emulated in other countries, Americans are increasingly espousing and adopting tyrannical ideologies of other nations. I truly believe that American Mormons have failed their own country and others by not being united in upholding and defending the Constitution of the United States. This is evidenced by the support given by them to programs and legislation that are clear violations of constitutional principles, and by their support of politicians who promote and support violations of the US Constitution. And not only have they ignored the admonitions in their scriptures and from their prophets and apostles to study, uphold, and abide by the principles of the US Constitution, but they have also largely ignored the warnings about secret combinations among them striving to gain control over their government and steal their wealth.

Not to call the Constitution of little worth, but the gospel is more important. If someone isn't striving to live gospel principles (church member or not), how should we expect the Constitution to be handled much differently? In truth, we can't. It takes honest, selfless, people with faith in causes greater than themselves to really uphold the Constitution. If those values degrade, well, then, so too will the Law of the Land. It's true like George Clay and Samizdat are saying, that the church is in a diaspora, but what's more important is the fact that if gospel principles are followed, those principles being observed are the foundation to a decent society, not the other way around.

The fact is that church members are supposed to revere the Constitution equally as they would the scriptures. They both came from the same source, right?
David O McKay said that next to living the gospel, there is nothing the church members should be engaged in more than befriending and upholding the Constitution.. Not verbatim, but we get the idea.
Your point is well noted, however.

The key PRINCIPLES of the Constitution are also GOSPEL PRINCIPLES. There isn't one constitution in today's world. The U.S. is one, Canada's is another, Mexico's another, etc. If people are devoted to being unselfish, honest, true chaste, the Constitution is not a problem. If you wish for me to elaborate further, I would be pleased to do so.

No, they aren't. The Constitution requires virtue to uphold it. The First Presidency's issues relate to it very well. How much of the welfare expenses have to do with illegitimate children or families that aren't in accordance with the Proclamation's statement that children should have a mother and a father who are faithful to one another? Or how about having a parent that scampers around, what would that tell you as a kid about how moral it is to be willing to risk property, life & limb. Or how about being willing to believe that even if you should die, decent virtuous causes won't be gone and defeated with your passing? Does that say something, or does it not? Faith is an important virtue friend, and it takes a whole lot of faith to execute the constitution as it is, otherwise, you might as well cower and cave on issues like the national debt, religious freedom, etc.

I too think we need to realize that the church is now officially NOT just an "American" church since the majority of the members live outside of the US. General Conference, just like the newer handbooks and all other church publications, are meant for worldwide consumption. That is why the talks are focused so much on faith, prayer, etc., etc., etc. Things that all members can relate to, whether in Utah or Timbuktu.

But I also think that too many members in the US think that all they have to do is 'church work' and that the Constitution is nice but not really worth the fight. They puff up in pride at being an American, but don't really understand how fundamentally different this country is now than it was 10, 20 or 50 years ago (when I was a kid). You always hear folks say in prayers that they are thankful for our freedoms, yet if you were to quiz them on what freedoms they really have, they would be wrong nearly 100% of the time. Our freedoms are almost completely gone, and will disappear soon unless we rise up and draw that line from which to start to retake the freedoms guaranteed by the Founding Fathers under the inspiration of the Holy Ghost.

My personal belief is that we need to stand up and speak out for the Constitution, not apart from, but in conjunction WITH the Gospel. Perhaps tying the Constitution to a lesson about home teaching is fishing for a connection, but if we compare the era of the Judges in the Old Testament with the Nephite government after King Mosiah with our Constitutional Republic, we see that these forms of government were all quite similar. Rooted in individual responsibility and maximum free will (war in heaven anyone?). But the Israelites rejected it for a King, the Nephites were overrun with corrupt politicians, and we are a bit of both (corrupt pols that want to be king, or, in the case of Barry, someone that sees that he will never have to spend another dime of his own money for a vacation or round of golf. O! that King Benjamin could chat with him for an hour or two of TRUE service to country! In fact, throw 99% of all pols into THAT fireside!)

So while I probably wouldn't teach a lesson in Japan on the Constitution, I certainly believe that Heavenly Father will hold me accountable as a natural born citizen of this once (and future) great country to fight for the principles of the Constitution, so that all men might enjoy the right to do as they please, whether to pursue greatness or make an utter fool of themselves.

What are your thoughts on Article 1 section 8 of the "Power to lay and collect taxes"?

How is this of God in your opinion?

"Common consent?"

From casting your vote? ♡ :)

What if one doesn't vote such as the Jehovah Witness congregation?

Any thoughts? ♡ :)

I don't know. What is the difference between our paying taxes to government and paying tithing to the Lord? Don't they both require taking money out of our pay checks?

Only good hearts make them the same.

They who are willing to freely give of their substance for the general welfare of all, I see no different as all would vote for serving and helping one another to the very best of all our abilities.

Every one dealing justly one with another as it is written in the Scriptures. ♡ :)

Federalist papers by Madison explained that General welfare was not individual welfare. General welfare is defense.

I know how much you would love this to mean forcibly taking money from everyone to give to the poor is ok but it's not. madison also in the federalis papers explains that taxes were for business and imported goods not individuals.

So taxes should only be taken from walmarts and big business corp. not people. If this was the case there would be a lot more money in the people's hands and less need for individual welfare. And a lot more surplus for individual helping others as God intended.

So we see D&c 98:9 When the wicked rule the people mourn.

Thus it is written of Ephraim such oratories of wind that would dry up the vineyard as well as the feeding upon this wind.

I would that you would understand that Madison is of Ephraim.

It will take affliction of heart and mind and soul for Ephraim to finally acknowledge their offence against God.

When the government is upon the shoulders of the one called Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace the poor he shall succor from the collected Tithes and Offerings and see to it that equity is established and righteousness is the law of the land for the general welfare of his people. ♡ :)

Inspired leaders like Melchizedek and Enoch understood this of a government under God. ♡ :)

Ephraim at first will not. Otherwise Zion would be redeemed even now. ♡ :)

When Ephraim and Judah finally allow the words of God given to be the standard to follow, no longer after idols and their detestable things and their sins, we will truly allow this government to be upon his shoulders, see Ezekiel 37:15-23. ♡ :)

Let the children of Zion then rejoice and be glad for the Lord will do great things. ♡ :)

So it is written in the book of Joel. ♡ :)

And as is written in the book of Isaiah when the proper fast is chosen. ♡ :)

The bridegroom will come and say "Here I am". ♡ :)

Thus also is it written in the Book of Ether in what is known as chapter 13 of this promised land and of a New Jerusalem which shall be upon it. ♡ :)

So also has it been written and testified of by Zenos when faithful laborers come into the vineyard to keep all the commandments of the Lord of the vineyard, fruits shall be brought forth that are equal and delightful unto the Lord of the vineyard and as one. ♡ :)

Like most of your posts Robert. It's very hard to understand what your trying to say.

If your saying Madison who was the father of the constitution whom God raised for his purpose to do his work as being decived and not understanding gods will and purposes.

I would remind you of d&c98 and D&c 101. Where God claims the constitution as his creation by men he raised for that purpose. And that we are commanded to abide by those principles. And that anything more or less then what God created will cometh evil.
I would also remind you that our prophet recomended reading the federalist papers in confrence of 87 over the pulpit.

Madison was not decived.

He is of Ephraim, wherefore for the Scriptures written to be proven true, Ephraim shall do that which is written that Ephraim shall and will do.

Shall the ax boast itself against him that heweth therewith?

Nay.

Those chosen and placed by God, fullfill the Scriptures written perfectly. ♡ :)

Understand this is an 8,000 year Script or play to be played out and consider it as a casting director placing actors in the scenes to fullfill the words of the Script or play perfectly.

Consider if you will in as small a space of time in infinity, as small a period of time as a million years could have 125 Scripts played out of 8,000 years each, one continual round of the same thing over and over seeking volunteers to play the parts.

And has it not been written that this is among the more wicked of the worlds created by the hand of God?

Read the Script through and through see what the House of Ephraim and Judah will do.

You can read as well the Scriptures written for Ismael given of the Angel Gabriel to them.

All these plays and acts and Scripts will be played out and none can boast and say I did this of myself, for it is already written what you will do according to the families of the earth you have been placed in.

If you are in the House of Ephraim and invited guests you will do what has been written you shall do.

I born into the House of Ephraim yet of Manasseh through my mother's side have to do what is written that I will do.

If it is written that of the house of Manasseh I may tread down and tear in pieces all false doctrine being taught, then such as it is written I shall do.

But not to boast, as if I am he who hews with the ax that is in the masters hand, but to see clearly that I might be an instrument to bring about great good in his hands should I desire it. ♡ :)

And you of direct decendant of Ephraim may come to say "What have I to do anymore with idols?" And finally return to keep the commandments of God given of his celestial law. And begin to bring forth the fruits that are equal and delightful and as one unto the Lord. ♡ :)

So where as some have said know your constitution, that is good, but far greater to know the Scriptures written and given of God as Jesus Christ has said. ♡ :)

Don't forget for even one moment that the elders of Israel include Ephraim and Judah.

That Ezekiel 37:15-23 is about to be fullfilled soon.

For the "One Stick" given unto Ephraim just needs to be brought before the eyes of Judah where they both see how to be confounded no more on how to treat the poor among us and both forsake their idols and detestable things and their transgressions together as one nation under God.

This I feel could happen soon. ♡ :)

Read and see. ♡ :)

If you talk with the Jews you will see, they would think it highly strange that anyone but them are the elders of Israel, even as Latter Days Saints feel the same that they are the only elders of Israel. ♡ :)

The Scriptures written declare "both houses" the "Elders of Israel". ♡ :)

Ezra Taft benson spoke on this durring april 65 confrence.

Where he said it would be the elders of isrial who where antiously engadeged in a good cause to understand and know and protect the constitution. That would be the ones to save it. That it would not be the "church "that dose this.!!

However the constitution is not the government . And the government will be destroyed. JS said that if the USA didn't make right the grievances of the early saints that the U.S. government would be destroyed and not even a potsherd would be found.
The U.S. government did not right those wrongs. It will be destroyed. It will only be the Constitution that will remain.

The scriptures say that the word will go forth from jeruselum and the law will go forth out of zion.

Zion being Jackson county. Which means that washinton D.c. Will no longer be the head of government. And the constitution will be held high as a standard for the world to follow.

Here are some ideas:
...................................................................................................................................................
Let us not be deceived in the sifting days ahead. Let us rally together on principle behind the prophet as guided by the promptings of the Spirit. We should continue to speak out for freedom and against socialism and communism. We should continue to come to the aid of patriots, programs, and organizations that are trying to save our Constitution through every legal and moral means possible. (October 1963, General Conference)

Couldn't this include "Guns for America" and "Oathkeepers?"
...................................................................................................................................................
[W]e will rally round the Constitution that was purchased by the blood of our fathers, and will support it….
[W]hile we do not trample under foot the Constitution, we will take care that others do not do it…. Shall we still bless the human family? Yes. Shall we rally around the Constitution of the United States, and protect it in its purity? Yes; we will save it when others forsake it. (September 13, 1857, Journal of Discourses, 5:246-247)

We will stand by that constitution and uphold the flag of our country when everybody else forsakes it. (March 5, 1865, Journal of Discourses, 11:92)
...................................................................................................................................................
[They] will tear away one plank of liberty after another, until the whole fabric will totter and fall; and many other nations will be cast down and empires destroyed; and this nation will have to suffer as others will. And it will be as Joseph Smith once said, “When all others forsake the Constitution, the Elders of this Church will rally around the standard and save its tattered shreds.” We will come to its rescue and proclaim liberty to all men. (November 30, 1879, Journal of Discourses, 20:357)
...................................................................................................................................................
These secret combinations were spoken of by Joseph Smith, years and years ago. I have heard him time and time again tell about them, and he stated that when these things began to take place the liberties of this nation would begin to be bartered away…. [W]e would to God that our rulers would be men of righteousness, and that those who aspire to position would be guided by honorable feelings—to maintain inviolate the Constitution and operate in the interest, happiness, well-being, and protection of the whole community. [When] we see…men begin to tear away with
impunity one plank after another from our Constitution, by and by we shall find that we are struggling with the wreck and ruin of the system which the forefathers of this nation sought to establish in the interests of humanity. But it is for us still to sustain these glorious principles of liberty bequeathed by the founders of this nation, still to rally round the flag of the Union, still to maintain all correct principles, granting the utmost extent of liberty to all people of all grades and of all nations. If other people see fit to violate these sacred principles, we must uphold them in their entirety, in their purity, and be patriotic and law abiding and act honorably toward our nation…. (July 3, 1881, Journal of Discourses, 22:143-144)
...................................................................................................................................................
And while other men are seeking to trample the Constitution under foot, we will try to maintain it. We have prophecies something like this somewhere; that the time would come when this nation would do as they are now doing—that is, they would trample under foot the Constitution and institutions of the nation, and the Elders of this Church would rally around the standard and maintain those principles which were introduced for the freedom and protection of men. We expect to do that, and to maintain all correct principle. (February 1, 1885, Journal of Discourses, 26:156)
...................................................................................................................................................
It has been predicted that the time will come when [the Constitution] will be threatened with destruction, and when that time comes the true Latter-day Saints will rally to its support. (1936, The Progress of Man, 299)
...................................................................................................................................................
I believe that it is the destiny of the Latter-day Saints to support the Constitution of the United States. The Prophet Joseph Smith is alleged to have said—and I believe he did say it—that the day would come when the Constitution would hang as by a thread. But he saw that the thread did not break, thank the Lord, and that the Latter-day Saints would become a balance of power, with others, to preserve that Constitution. If there is—and there is one part of the Constitution hanging as by a thread today—where do the Latter-day Saints belong? Their place is to rally to the support of that Constitution, and maintain it and defend it and support it by their lives and by their vote. Let us not disappoint God nor his prophet. Our place is fixed. (April 1933, General Conference)
...................................................................................................................................................
It is my conviction that the elders of Israel, widely spread over the nation, will at that crucial time successfully rally the righteous of our country and provide the necessary balance of strength to save the institutions of constitutional government. (October 1961, General Conference)
...................................................................................................................................................
Yes, but it will still hang, and there will be enough of good people, many who may not belong to our Church at all, people who have respect for law and for order, and for Constitutional rights, who will rally around with us and save the Constitution. I have never read that that thread would be cut. It will hang; the Constitution will abide and this civilization, that the Lord has caused to be built up, will stand fortified through the power of God, by putting from our hearts all that is evil, or that is wrong in the sight of God, by our living as we should live, acceptable to him. (October 1922, General Conference)
...................................................................................................................................................
What are some of the key actions we are told to do within the statements above?

Bee Prepared posed an excellent and pertinent question. How are the Elders of the Church going to save the Constitution and this great country ? Let me ask this question. How many members of this forum care about saving the US Constitution ? Are you taking any action that you think and hope will prepare you to help save the Constitution ? Or are you waiting for the Prophet/Church to give specific instructions ? Do you know that calls to action were given by or under the direction of a Prophet around 27 years ago ?

[They] will tear away one plank of liberty after another, until the whole fabric will totter and fall; and many other nations will be cast down and empires destroyed; and this nation will have to suffer as others will. And it will be as Joseph Smith once said, “When all others forsake the Constitution, the Elders of this Church will rally around the standard and save its tattered shreds.” We will come to its rescue and proclaim liberty to all men. (November 30, 1879, Journal of Discourses, 20:357)
