April 13, 2011 – SAO PAULO – U.S. scientists discovered two giant whirlpools in the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Guyana and Suriname. It became a sensational discovery because this part of the ocean has been studied thoroughly, and no one expected anything like that to appear in the area.
I've never heard of or seen anything quite like this - are whirlpools a natural occurring phenomena like this on occasion or is this something to be concerned about? Seems to me there's got to be a rather large opening on the ocean floor for these things to be 230 miles in diamater. :-o

There use to be a big whirlpool off the coast5 of Denmark/Norway. It was a common feature for hundreds of years. It was called the Maelstrom. Then it just disappeared. We don't know what causes these whirlpools or why sometimes take a century or two off before reappearing.
