The operator of Japan's stricken Fukushima nuclear plant said Monday it planned to dump thousands of tons of radioactive water into the Pacific, as the government was accused of covering up the extent of radiation levels.
X( How are they being allowed to do this?

I wonder if it is possible for this to be the catalyst for one third of the fish in the world's oceans to be destroyed? Probably not...but this was my first thought. I would be interested to hear from someone with more scientific understanding than myself on this...

I thought about that as well, but what about 1/3 of the 'ships'? How would radiation destroy ships?

They are shifting major shipping lanes as a result....

Maybe Godzilla will attack ships instead of Tokyo?

They do this because the radiation will be greatly diluted in the ocean and be of no harm to humanity while it decays to nothing over the next few weeks, months, or years (depending on the element). It's like pouring a 55 gal drum of arsenic in the middle of the ocean...it will dissipate and become harmless. What do you want them to do with the water??? Store it? Let it seep into the ground and mix with aquifers? ... It's a vast ocean and very resilient. On the other hand, Flipperzilla would make a cool reality show!

I don't think they really have any choice. Where else can they put it?

Carlos, uranium, plutonium and caesium do not decay to nothing in weeks, months or even in a few short years. Caesium, for example, has a half life of 30 years, meaning that 1/2 of its radioactivity is gone after 30 years, thus, it would take 200 years for all of the radioactivity to diminish. Of course, its half-life depends upon the isotope of said element. Typical plutonium has a half-life of 24,000 years while other isotopes can have half-lives of 20 minutes. The isoptopes of these elements at Fukushima are not of the short-lived kind. Once in the ocean, they will remain radioactive for a very LONG time, although, the fact that it will get dispersed will greatly minimize its negative impact on life, but still, negative and harmful it will be, especially since just a few milligrams of plutonium ingested by an animal can be fatal. You can't downplay the impact of dumping these radioactive elements into the ocean.

I have some fish to sell you! ....take your pick - Japan or Gulf of Mexico!
