11 year old boy describes heaven after near-death experience

Post by Col. Flagg »

Thought this was a neat and uplifting story - had to share...

http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/42191453/ ... ?gt1=43001" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
After a burst appendix nearly cost 4-year-old Colton Burpo his life in 2003, his parents were thankful just to have him alive and well. But when he opened up about his brush with death a few months later, they were shocked when he described a very vivid trip to heaven, and spoke of matters about which he had no apparent way of knowing.

During an automobile trip, when Sonja Burpo asked him about his memories of being in the hospital, little Colton replied: “Yes, Mommy, I remember — that’s where the angels sang to me.” A sweet answer, to be sure — but then Colton made his parents’ jaws drop when he told them about sitting in Jesus’ lap, watching his parents while he lay seemingly near death, and meeting his great-grandfather.
But most poignantly, Colton described meeting a sibling in heaven — even though he had no way of knowing that his mother had miscarried two years before he was born, since his parents had never told him.

Todd Burpo began telling of his son’s heaven-sent visions from the pulpit of the Crossroads Wesleyan Church in Imperial, Neb., where he serves as pastor. Word of mouth spread, and the family landed a book deal. The book — “Heaven Is for Real,” written by Todd with co-writer Lynn Vincent — has become a best-seller, with some 1.5 million copies in print since its release in November.
Read an excerpt from ‘Heaven Is for Real’

Appearing live on TODAY Monday with Sonja and Colton, who’s now 11, Todd told Matt Lauer he understands that naysayers may believe Colton’s story is a little too heavenly to be true — initially, so did he and Sonja. “At first we were surprised; we never anticipated to talk to our son about these things,” Todd told Matt Lauer.

“We didn’t share at first, and then once we started sharing, people were amazed,” Sonja Burpo added. “They were encouraged by what we were sharing with them.”

Colton was stricken with appendicitis shortly before his fourth birthday. Family guilt was heavy — for five days he lay getting sicker and sicker with what the family believed was stomach flu, which had previously hit Colton’s older sister Cassie.

Little Colton nearly didn’t make it: He lay in a hospital bed for 17 days. When he finally rallied, the family rejoiced — but they were floored when, months later, the boy began matter-of-factly describing what he had experienced when he was in between life and death: seeing Jesus dressed in royal purple, meeting John the Baptist, having angels sing to him to ease his anxiety.

The Burpos believed these were things Colton could have gleaned from his Bible studies. But he also told his mother he saw her talking on the phone in another room while he was having surgery, and saw his father praying in a small room, all while he was seated in Jesus’ lap.
“What caught my attention was he could tell me where I was while he was in surgery,” Todd told Lauer. “The surgeon couldn’t tell me that, the nurses couldn’t, my wife couldn’t tell me where I was praying. But he could tell me.”

Colton also spoke of meeting a long-departed relative in heaven, telling NBC News: “I was just sitting by the Holy Spirit and then this guy comes up to me and says, ‘Are you Todd’s son?’ I say yes, and he says, ‘Well, I’m his grandfather.’ ”

Colton said that everyone in heaven has wings. On Monday, he described his great-grandfather “Pops” as being “very big, huge wings, curly hair, a big smile, and he was very nice.”

But the real shocker came when Colton told his mother, “Mommy, I have two sisters.” Sonja told her son that he had to be referring to his oldest sister, Cassie, and his cousin Traci, but he responded: “No — I have two sisters. You had a baby die in your tummy, didn’t you?”

Sonja told Lauer the family had never uttered a word about the miscarriage to Colton — and what’s more, they never even learned the sex of their miscarried child. “It was a private hurt that we didn’t even share with our friends,” Sonja said, adding Colton’s revelation was at first “shocking, but then a relief that she’s OK, which we didn’t know she was a she.”

In a subsequent TODAY segment Monday, Sonja filled in Colton’s description of his meeting with his sister: “He told us what she looked like, and she wouldn’t stop hugging him. And she doesn’t have a name.”

“When he told us about his sister in heaven, that we hadn’t told him about, [it was] another one of those ‘holy cow’ moments — OK, he can’t make this stuff up, he can’t invent this; no memory was planted,” Todd told Lauer. “But the peace that came over us, and the healing, like, ‘Wow, I have a daughter in heaven waiting for me’ — I think a lot of people need that type of hope and healing, too. And I think that’s what a lot of people are finding when they hear Colton’s testimony, to know what they have to look forward to.”
When Lauer asked Colton what heaven looked like, the 11-year-old replied, “Well, there’s a lot of color. There are a lot of people and a lot of angels.”

In his second segment later on Monday, Colton gave Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb some additional details — such as the fact that there are no old people in heaven. “Nobody wears glasses, [and] you’re in like your 20s, 30s.”

Todd Burpo told The New York Times that the family is donating much of the money they make from the book sales. As for Colton, he’s mostly happy his story is helping people.

“People are getting blessed, and they’re going to have healing from their hurts,” the boy told the New York Times. “I’m happy for that.”

Not so much for me. There are many many things we have no comprehension of. I hesitate to discount the story based on "his angels have wings!" :-o

I'm not saying I am convinced either. Just the way some people react to various things that do not fit their preconceived ideas - I am sure they would have been calling Joseph Smith the spawn of the devil for claiming that Heavenly Father and Jesus were two separate being that had tangible bodies..

Sorry your red flags are going up. I have studied a lot of near death experiences. I know this boy is telling the truth. What you have to understand is that everybody has their own idea of what heaven is, what God is, and like. Some people describe themselves as a ball of light, or God as a ball of light(usually these people didn't believe in God before their NDE [near death experience]. So it seems that what your concept is of spirit, body, God etc. is before your NDE, affects what you see during your NDE. The people who have had a NDE say that there are no words to describe what they experience. We are so limited in this earthly realm that those words don't exisit to explain it to others.Try to understand others interpretations of God, religion, etc. and you will find there are many beautiful experiences to read about. These NDE's have only increased my faith and testimony of a loving Father and Brother in Heaven. :)

Also, I think we are only shown what we can comprehend. Some see more than others, and some describe feeling that the angel wanted to show them more, but they could not comprehend what they would see.

About the angels having wings, think of a 4 year old trying to describe people moving place to place very rapidly. Thinking of a place and almost immediately being there. That is what others describe, and I think a 4 year old could only understand that type of rapid movement by having "wings". Hope you will find the beauty of the story and the peace that it gives to others that may not have the faith to believe as you do.

Beautiful explanation! In fact, I believe J.S. asked specifically about the wings of beasts (in heaven) mentioned in Revelation, and was told that it represented the ability to move (?) Here is the reference:
“Q. What are we to understand by the eyes and wings, which the beasts had? A. Their eyes are a representation of light and knowledge, that is, they are full of knowledge; and their wings are a representation of power, to move, to act, etc. (D&C 77:4)”
I agree with you 100% that I think what people are shown or see in these type of experiences is based on their understanding. And I think a lot of times we think that we know so much when in fact we have not even started to comprehend - every now and then I feel that I get glimpses, and I am so in awe at even the small hints - it makes all the troubles that we are going thru and will have to go thru COMPLETELY INSIGNIFICANT! So hard to believe - of course trials are hard, otherwise they wouldn't be trials! If even the lowest glory of the telestial kingdom is beyond our ability to comprehend...it makes me very excited! And this story about this boy - it spoke peace to my soul, it feels right.

Scarecrow wrote:The wings part doesn't bother me so much. My sister was once visited by my grandfather in a vision, and he had a crippled hand that was shot when he was a teenager. In her vision, she saw his hand was crippled, and she asked him about it and he replied that if he appeard to her as he really was, she wouldn't recognize him, so he appeared to him in a form she would.

With that said, my red flags have still gone up with this story, as they always do, when people - in this case the boy's parents (pastors no less) - use their NDE's to get gain.
Yeah, I was a little skeptical with the wings part and also the parents using the experience to make some money off selling a book, but I still thought it was an inspiring, uplifting story and let's be honest - I don't post much that is uplifting since most of what I post has to do with worldly events, the federal 'government', money and economics - all of which is usually not good news.

The wings part didn't sound right to me either. And I don't agree that we see our false ideas of heaven if we have a vision of it. If he saw a symbolic representation of the afterlife, then I would say it was a vision. In that case if we are to learn anything about the afterlife from him it will be by interpreting the symbols meant for him and maybe his family. Just my opinion, if they are being truthful.
My personal view is that they are encouraging their son's story because they want to believe and make some money off of it.

This was not to be misinterpreted. In the boys statement he says "everyone in heaven has wings." This would take in angels and everbody else, inclusive. My problem is that Joseph Smith, to my knowledge, never mentioned that Angel Moroni had wings; Peter, James and John had wings; John the Baptist had wings, nor that God and His Son had wings. With all these accounts, why did he not mention it one time?

My thinking is that we will travel by thought. If we are to have wings, they may only be for looks and may represent something symbolic.

If a fourteen year boy can see Jesus and heavenly father, then who are we to discount the account of an eleven year old boy?

I believe whole in his NDE, The whole wing thing, maybe it was a way for him to understand he was in heaven, If he saw wings, or if he thought he saw wings, who cares, I believe he saw the Savior, and had a peek into heaven. That is what is important.

Once there was a man who arrived at the Gates of Heaven, He was met by Peter. Peter asked the man; What Religion are you? The man replied; I don't have one. Peter said to the man well, you have to choose one, as the man entered Heaven with peter they passed many rooms with many different beliefs, as they passed one room Peter told the man to be very quiet, To that the Man replied Why is that? Peter Replied in that room there are the Mormons, They believe there the only ones up here.

The Gospel of Jesus Christ is not Just for Members of the Church, it is for all men.
I see many people trying to live good lives, and they are decived by the precepts of men,
There are many who recieve great blessings and they are not LDS, to include A NDE.

Thanks Will....my thoughts also. One of the best books I've ever read was "Return From Tomorrow" . I have never felt the love of my Savior as I did from reading of this man's experience. He was a doctor by the way and didn't publish the book for profit, he was urged to do so, so that others could learn from his experience.

I would sincerely like to have a better understanding of exactly what is meant from each of you that posted about "red flags" being raised.

I would also like NoGreaterLove to expound on the "Sorry, not buying it" comment he or she posted.

Do the "red flags" & "not buying it" comments mean that you don't believe the little boy had a beyond-the-veil experience, or that perhaps he had some kind of spiritual experience but you suspect his parents planted memories concerning it for gain, or does "Sorry, not buying it" mean you'll not be purchasing the book, or what?

I have read & studied volumes of near death experiences (NDE's) and while different words may be used by the various individuals reporting it, there is a definite pattern common to all of them. I suggest we not let the individual's choice of words used to describe their experience be a stumbling block to us.

Scarecrow commented "my red flags have still gone up with this story, as they always do, when people - in this case the boy's parents (pastors no less) - use their NDE's to get gain." But how is that different than many LDS authors (which could arguably be, in a lay sense, equal to pastors) who have shared their spiritual knowledge, insights & experiences in the various books they sell to the public for money?

I encourage all to listen with open hearts, rather than being poised to pounce, when others -- particularly non-lds -- share their spiritual experiences openly. They may err in their interpretation of some portions of the event, but if we have ears to hear, many truths are being testified, which can enrich our understanding of things as they really are.

I believe many things that we perceive with our spiritual eyes are symbolic. The scriptures are full of symbolic representations that were seen through spiritual eyes.

I'd also like to point out that although the boy is now 11, these events occurred when he was 4, so he had a much more limited vocabulary & ability to communicate to his parents what he experienced.

I have read the book in it's entirety and would encourage you to reserve such harsh statements until you are familiar with the whole of it, rather than a mere excerpt of it -- it's the fair thing to do -- then if you're interested in discussing it from an LDS perspective, it could be a great exchange of thoughts.

I second Col. Flagg's initial impression of it (and doesn't Joseph Smith teach us to act on our initial impressions?) -- it's an uplifting story worth sharing.

Speaking of NDE's. Does anyone believe this one?

A man once pronounced dead is miraculously revived. Later as he positions himself upright in his hospital bed, he shakes his head over and over without a spoken word.

His visiting wife seeing him in a state of dismay, asks him, “What’s the matter?”

The man once again shakes his head and then replies, “I saw some really strange sights and can't believe what I saw.”

“What did you see” she asked?

“Well, a guide all dressed in white took me on a tour to show me the highest degree in each of the three kingdoms,” the man answered.

“What's so strange about that?”

“Here’s why. We first went to the Telestial world and once there, I was awed in seeing beautiful, rich green country, massive trees and thick shrubs of every kind. And everywhere I looked the land was dotted with huge mansions. I thought it was so beautiful and I just knew the other Kingdoms would be so much more greater. Later the guide showed me a sign that read:

“Blessed Are The Pure In Heart”

“Then we went to the Terrestrial world. Once there I noticed the scenery wasn’t as beautiful, the trees were smaller and not as plentiful. Instead of mansions, there were large, plain houses. I thought there was some kind of mistake. It wasn’t at all like I imagined. Then the guide showed me a sign that read:

“Blessed Are The Peacemakers”

“We then went to the Celestial world. I tell you my heart sank while staring at the countyside. The trees, shrubs and grass were greenish-brown in color. And instead of large homes, there were small huts scattered throughout the land. I asked the guide why the Telestrial world was so beautiful and the Celestial world was so dingy looking. That’s when he showed me yet another sign that read:

“Blessed Are The Poor.”

Disclaimer. This story is not true.

Which portions do you believe he's being truthful about?

I've studied the NDE from all aspects angles, Non LDS and LDS.

Everything the little boy said is spot on w the Restored Gospel- family connections, Father and Son 2 different people, Holy Spirit a 3rd person, his unborn sister he never knew about :all fit the Restored Gospel teachings-except the "Angels w wings" part.

(Think about his pastor dad having to wrestle w the whole Trinity concept now-but I digress).

My speculation re angels w wings from non members is this:

Angels assigned to earth to deliver Restored Gospel messages don't need wings, hence Joseph told us "Angels don't have wings". It could be interpreted as "Angels assigned to deliver restored Gospel messages don't have or even need wings".

I've met a few LDS members who have said they've seen angels w wings in Heaven, but that's the realm they re been relegated to. They are usually the warring angels who haven't came to earth etc. Most of the winged angels seen -were in the pre existence.

My thought is: the non winged angels usually are resurrected beings on assignment from the presence of God and come down to do their assignments as our fellow servants, and wings aren't needed.

In addition to the angels have wings problem and the experience being used to make money (always a big red flag for me), here's a couple of other things that are problematic about this story:

The miscarried sibling: the church doesn't do the ordinance work for miscarriages. Babies have to be born and take a breath before they can be recorded on church records and have the work done for them. I assume this means that we don't receive our spirits until we are born. So the boy wouldn't really have another sibling in heaven.

Sitting on Jesus' lap: Wouldn't his spirit be full size?

I don't know that the whole thing is a complete lie, but I'm pretty sure it isn't completely true. Even if it is, I think publicizing it the way they are is completely wrong. If it's true, it should be held sacred, not flagrantly plastered all over the media.

(Return from tomorrow was a great book, by the way).
