I'm of the belief that the earth is sort of a living thing - if so, could it not groan for what we are doing to it? Thunder? :))

...STRANGE SOUNDS BEING REPORTED ACROSS THE FLORIDA BIG BEND...

THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL REPORTS OF VERY STRANGE SOUNDS FROM THE WOODVILLE AREA SINCE ABOUT 645 PM EST. THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BELIEVES THIS PHENOMENON IS BEING CAUSED BY THUNDER FROM DISTANT LIGHTNING STROKES... BOUNCING OFF A VERY STABLE LAYER ABOVE THE GROUND. THIS IS CALLED DUCTING...AND CAN ALLOW SOUND TO TRAVEL UNUSUALLY LONG DISTANCES. THIS SOUND HAS BEEN MISTAKENLY ATTRIBUTED TO POSSIBLE TORNADOES...BUT WE AT THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE WANT TO BE VERY CLEAR THAT THERE ARE NO TORNADOES ... AND NONE ARE EXPECTED

It did not sound like thunder to me at all - sounded more like the wind we get when tornadoes are near (like a close train rushing by). It also sounded very much like a plane engine - maybe they were testing some large engine at the airport. The flash of light could have been simply lightening, or, who knows... :-?

We have a lot of thunder storms on the Great Plains. In fact, we had nearly continuous thunder from early morning until around noon today. Nothing like that!

I have heard man made electromagnetic frequencies when the military was busy testing their toys in 2002 - 2003. The resonant frequencies were a constant tone. No doubt, in order to produce the intended outcome the frequencies generated would have to be perfectly constant & predictable.

This sounds like something in the earth or upper atmosphere being 'torn apart'.

Or is it, as the National Weather Service claims, simply 20 uninterrupted minutes of distant thunder bouncing off the ionosphere that ends in a flash of light, and nothing to be worried about?

It sounds like a train to me. Are there any train tracks nearby?

It sounds like the rumble/roar of an airplane engine. If an airport was 4 miles away, maybe an airplane was circling the airport waiting to land - that sometimes happens.

When in the USAF the jet engine people would static test their jet engines, static test means the aircraft was held down and didn't fly off, or sometimes just the engine was tied down. Those tests would last for 20-30 minutes. Thats what is sounds like to me, a Jet engine static test.

However, I have been in the forest during windstorms and that recorded sound is very similiar. However, the trees in the video do not seem to be moving.

So I vote for a static jet engine test!

It sounds like the wind rushing through the forest. My family sometimes hears that sound where we camp in Utah. Its awesome! The sound is so intense it feels like its inside of you.

I agree it sounds just like that, however, if a jet were circling there would be variations in the noise cue to the doppler effect as the plane came towards and then away from the home. The sound is constant for 20 minutes (though they only filmed the last 8 minutes or so). I can think of several things it sounds like, but the continuous nature of it seems to rule out anything known.

Like Flagg said, it does sound like a jet, but the nearest airport is 4 miles away. No way would the sound be that loud at such a distance, especially with the trees and other foliage as a soundbreak.

I think you may be right about it sounding closer to the wind though, and the the people making the video thought it was a tornado as well and not a plane. But like you said the trees aren't moving. But what is curious to me is the people in the video said it was shaking the whole house and ground, which leads me to think of something causing vibrations.
I used to live three miles from Luke Air Force base and when they tested their engines it made the house vibrate and it was very loud.

Remember that the end of the sound is directly related to the flash of light. I doubt it was a jet engine.
