I am sure some of you have seen this prophecy. I have been reading Prophecy, Key to the Future by Duane Crowther. I wanted to share these insights because I hadn’t seen them before. It helped me understand time line things which is so often discussed on this forum.
A quote from Mosiah Hancock, son of a close friend and bodyguard of Joseph Smith.

“There will be two great political parties in this country. One will be called the Republican, and the ot eh the Democrat party. These two parties will go to war and out of these two parties will spring another party which will be the Independent American Party. The United States will spend her strength and means warring in foreign lands until other nations will say, “Let’s divide up the lands of the United States”, then the people of the US will unite and swear by the blood of their fore-fathers, that the land shall not be divided. Then the country will go to war, and they will fight until one half of the US army will give up and the rest will continue to struggle. They will keep on until they are very ragged and discouraged and almost ready to give up – when the boys from the mountains will rush forth in time to save American Army from defeat and ruin. And they will say, ‘ Brethren, we are glad you have come; give us men, henceforth, who can talk with God’. The you will have friends, but you will save the country when it’s liberty hangs by a hair as it were.”

Ezra Taft Benson also quotes Joseph Smith:

“concerning the US, the Lord revealed to his prophets that its greatest threat would be a vast, world-wide secret combination which would not only threaten the US but seek to overthrow the freedom of all lands, nations and countries. In connection with the attack on the US, the Lord told his prophet there would be an attempt to overthrow the country by destroying the Constitution. Joseph Smith predicted that the time would come when the Constitution would hand, as it were, by a thread, and at that time this people will step forth and save it from the threatened destruction. It is my conviction that the Elders of Israel, widely spread over the nation , will at that crucial time successfully rally the righteous of our country and provide the necessary balance of strength to save the institutions of constitutional government. …The prophets in our day have continually warned us of these internal threats – that our greatest threat from Socialistic Communism lies within our country…As the First Presidency pointed out in a statement signed in 1936, if we continue to uphold Communism by not making it treasonable, our land shall be destroyed, for the Lord has said that whatsoever nation shall uphold such secret combinations to get power and gain until they shall spread over the nation – behold, they shall be destroyed. The Lord has declared that before the second coming of Christ, it will be necessary to destroy the secret works of darkness in order to preserve the land of Zion – the Americas. The world-wide secret conspiracy which has risen up in our day to fulfill these prophecies is easily identified.”

Joseph Smith said:

“there is a land beyond the Rocky mountains that will be invaded by the heathen Chinese unless great care and protection are given.”

October 9 1960 President Benson said:
“there is little doubt that the leaders of Red China view war as inevitable and await on the propitious moment in which to strike.

Duane Crother speaks of Two Periods of War in his Book, Prophecy the Key to the Future.”
He says there is the Preparatory wars which will bring people to come to Christ, and the Wars of complete destruction. The first “

is to allow the gospel to enter into areas where it has been prohibited in the past."

After these, the Spirit of the Lord withdraws from all nations and the “day of the gentiles” is done.

This is exactly what Ether 8 is preparing us for - Chapter 8 Heading: There is strife and contention over the kingdom—Akish forms an oath-bound secret combination to slay the king—Secret combinations are of the devil and result in the destruction of nations—Modern Gentiles are warned against the secret combination that will seek to overthrow the freedom of all lands, nations, and countries.

What we also learn from this chapter is that Secret Combinations and Gadianton Robbers are not synonymous, although, the Gadiantons did have their own secret combinations. Secret Combinations existed long before the Gadiantons:

15 And it came to pass that thus they did agree with Akish. And Akish did administer unto them the oaths which were given by them of old who also sought power, which had been handed down even from Cain, who was a murderer from the beginning.

The question we might all ask ourselves is, what does it mean to "awake to a sense of our awful situation"? I don't believe that just being aware is enough. We are told to "awake", and that suggests that we need to take action. Which actions? Those things that we have been so commanded to do.

24 Wherefore, the Lord commandeth you, when ye shall see these things come among you that ye shall awake to a sense of your awful situation, because of this secret combination which shall be among you; or wo be unto it, because of the blood of them who have been slain; for they cry from the dust for vengeance upon it, and also upon those who built it up.

We know from a letter my Milton Musser about the Second American Civil War:

Second Great Rebellion or Chicago Quote – A. Milton Musser papers, LDS Church Archives. Letter from Nephi Packard to A. Milton Musser on July 24, 1896:

“… My brother, Noah Packard, says that he heard the Prophet Joseph say that the next great (U.S. civil) war after the war of the rebellion (the Civil War of the 1860′s between the North and the South) would commence in a little town now called Chicago but at that time it would have grown to be a very large city. And another brother told me that the Prophet said that the cause of the next great trouble of the United States would be the depreciation of the currency of the United States. I believe I have given you all the facts in as short and concise manner as possible.”


And we know from the President George A. Smith Vision as recorded by David H. Horne and others that the Chinese and Russians will invade and conduct a nuclear strike following a devaluation of the currency, gun confiscation, and civil unrest.

"He said the United States would take away the weapons of the people. They would have their missiles in big holes in the ground, which he described as being like grain silos. The Soviets would send their own missiles to try to destroy them, as well as U.S. military bases and cities. They would also send in ground troops. President Smith indicated that this attack would take place on a holiday after the Presidential election, but before the official inauguration. He said that the President at this time would be of Greek ancestry." (David H. Horne, SLC, UT)

"However, Pres. Smith did tell him to look specifically for the day when the American Dollar was so worthless that no other country would allow payment in dollars, for that would signal the beginning of such a severe depression that only LDS people who had their food supplies and clothing supplies and whatever they needed for heat and to cook with would be able to survive."
