Someone told me that Elder Packer would bless anything he put in his body at a time when he was in very poor health. Who knows if it's true? Anyone know?

I remember in the early 1980's before Elder Tuttle died, I think of cancer, He prayed or asked that the prayers offered in his behalf be given to others. Something I have never forgotten. I dont know if I will ever comprehend that.

An atheist was taking a walk through the woods. "What majestic trees!
What powerful rivers! What beautiful animals!" he said to himself. As he continued walking alongside the river he heard a rustling in the bushes.
Turning to look, he saw a 7 foot grizzly charging towards him. He ran as
fast as he could up the path. Looking over his shoulder he saw that the
bear was closing in on him. His heart was pumping frantically and he tried to run even faster. He tripped and fell on the ground. He rolled over to pick himself up but saw the bear raising his paw to take a swipe
at him. At that instant the atheist cried out: "Oh my God...";
Time stopped.
The bear froze.
The forest was silent.
It was then that a bright light shone upon the man and a voice came out of the sky saying: "You deny my existence for all of these years, teach others I don't exist, and even credit creation to a cosmic accident. Do you expect me to help you out of this predicament? Am I to count you as a believer?"
The atheist looked directly into the light, "It would be hypocritical of me to suddenly ask you to treat me as a Christian now, but perhaps, could you make the BEAR a Christian?"
"Very well," said the voice. The light went out. And the sounds of the forest resumed.
And then the bear lowered his paw, bowed his head and spoke: "Lord, bless this food which I am about to receive and for which I am truly
thankful. Amen."

"The following Sunday Elder Packer visited him at home and gave him a blessing in which he told Bruce he should 'quit resisting the will of the Lord.' We both knew what he meant. At the conclusion, with tears running down his face, Bruce looked at me as I stood at the foot of the bed, and said, 'Amelia, do you know what he just did?' 'Yes,' I answered, 'he has sealed you unto death.'
"That was so hard on Bruce. He wanted so much to live. But as I showed Elder Packer out, Bruce got up, folded the bedspread as he always did at night, got ready for bed, and got under the covers. Always before he would insist that I make the bed and he would lay on top of it, fully dressed. But this was his way of saying to the Lord, 'I am bowing to your will.' He passed away a short time later."

Henmasher wrote:I had an idea come as I read OI's comment on the possibility of keys involved. Well here is another idea. God entrusts us to act in His name and to do as He does. He could just bless our food without a word involved. Maybe He is teaching us how to be Gods and to perform as He does. There is no coincidence that the patriarch of the home is given the opportunity to call on someone. We learn from praying and we most importantly learn how to be like our Father in Heaven. Do as He does and we may return to where He dwells. He organized everything so I would confidently assume He blesses it as well. He is ever teaching us isn't He. He organized it all and blessed it. I worked to organize that meal and now I ask for it to be blessed. Or course all glory to God but you can see how He is teaching us in every aspect of Christ's Gospel and commandment? Awesome!!

we pay tithing right
we are sold that irrespective that if we don't work we dont get paid, that the pay we receive is ALL his, and paying tithing is just giving a little bit of his money back to him, right
everything we receive is a gift from him
a blessing
millions DIE from lack of ANYthing in their stomachs, even a little glucose can save their LIFE
and we are all overweight, and we know that.
and yet we ask our god to "bless this food" ?huh?
i regard that as a slap in his face and i would be insulted if my children asked me to bless it after i designed it, planted it, grew it, rained on it, shone my sun on it, and gave it to them
i give thanks
i reject the "bless this food to nourishenstrenghten our bodies and make us strong" as a mindless robotic expression and not a prayer
i have heard it in countless chapels and homes and it means nothign to me, its referred to as "lifting the curse" its done too often through fear, and not thanks. how on earth can we bless the hot chocolate and biscuits after church i have no idea
the very act of doing so demonstrates to me that as a people we have no idea who god is and how he is working in our lives and what our relationship to him is
what others do is their business

Ah, Aussie, you're making me miss our old resident bulldog, CHH.
I think Heavenly Father is thankful when we remember to pray. As we learn, we do better. I'm proud of my ignorant five year old who prays nightly in his vain repetitions, and I know his prayers will become more meaningful in time. I think Heavenly Father probably feels similarly. We are all morons, after all. I'm sure even those who try to be very thoughtful in their prayers ask for idiotic stuff now and then.
Heck, last week I'm sure the Lord had a good chuckle at one of my requests that I no longer have a desire to be "blessed" with.

My thoughts too, ChelC. I tried to say the same thing on another thread. I choose to believe that God is more forgiving and pleased with our efforts (even if they might seem pathetic at times) than we sometimes realize.

come on guys, back on topic
this is about BLESSING the food, not giving thanks
sigh
do we need Doc Jones to post more pearls from the Book of Mormon to answer this or can I just say the word Rameumpton to achieve same effect?
There is a reason god does not give the holy ghost, or priesthood to children
he expects more of us, we have a mind, a brain, the ability to reason, and contenxtualise, and think comprehensively.
IF we really want god to bless the poor'n'needy and bless the prophet and bless those not here today that they may arrive safely and bless the missionaries, ya don't think a mindless "bless this Coke and Cookies" jams his channel?
you guys are too kind, but thats cool. im hoping God is too. Lord knows I'll need as much kindness and understanding as possible when I get judged
Chelc- I'm not CHH, not even a latchet on his shoe. the guy was toxic, but too often he was right. IF, and this is a big IF, if he walks his talk, then good for him he's made the jump most of us are afraid or unwilling to do. having said that he is toxic, albeit too often right for his own good. . I'm just caustic and occasionally right.

Maybe he reserves those ones for His personal comedy channel.
