Costcoed to death? Food "Supplies"

Post by pritchet1 »

I remember helping my parents buy Sam Andy foods (which mostly turned up as substitutes as TVP and potato flakes) but Costco is making Food storage look bad -

The monstrous, 5,011 serving package, courtesy of food outfitter Shelf Reliance (hey, at least we'll have kept our senses of humor during doomsday!) claims their end days buffet contains "only top-of-the-line products," "developed with everyday menu planning in mind." Which makes sense, of course, because the only thing worse than knowing that the entire eastern seaboard has been leveled by nukes or a horde of flesh-feasting space titans is repetitive bunker fare—dehydrated fish skin AGAIN, mom?

Possibly more disconcerting than the notion of a year underground eating food from Costco is the fact that the package isn't just marketed for emergencies, but for "long-term food storage supply."
Well, it is for less than an ounce of gold

I agree, very shallow thinking for someone concerned about "Rouge Government!" Hopefully he has a great recipe for cooking and eating his gold. Its gonna take a lot of gold to get my last can of wheat from me, I'm afraid it'll cost the buyer at least a "lead" bullet, "if" he's better than me, that is!

Actually, I've bought some Shelf Reliance food (not from Costco, btw) and it is better than many of the other brands. It costs a little more than say Provident Pantry, but it's quality is good. No, I'm not a seller or dealer, I just happen to like it.

Chicfoom, the freeze dried food is better than dehydrated, over all.

The article is from someone who obviously thinks a year's food supply is foolish.
I say you are foolish if you don't have a few year's supply and know how to use it!!
I think that one could spend their money a bit more wisely using buckets of standard bulk foods (available through the church, Honeyville Grain, and others for very little), a good pantry full of constantly rotated wet-pack canned items and dried items, and supplementing with some specialty freeze dried canned items. Their money would go a lot further and feed a lot more people. But they have to be willing to learn how to cook and use it. Buy a wheat grinder, some spices, and some cook books.

I laugh at some of this prepackaged stuff. If you can afford it, go for it, but their marketing food storage to a busy society that "just doesn't" have time to worry about fixing food from their food storage.

News flash! What are you going to do all day long after the economy and governments crash? Working, driving, surfing on the Internet, going to soccer practice for your kids? No . . . You'll have plenty of time to learn how to grind wheat and make bread, to prepare food, to grow food. Food is going to be one of the biggest things you will be worrying about and doing all day long. Fresh fruits and vegetables are going to be better than freeze-dried menus from Applebees.
