How I see it.
When Christ came to earth, he came to the Jews. The signs of his coming were given to all the earth that all might “believe on his name” as shown below in Helaman 14:3-7,12.
The Jews were first to hear the gospel and then it was sent to the Gentiles. And although the decedents of Lehi and Mulek were called Jews, in all reality they were from Ephraim and Manasseh and were referred to as being Jews because they came from Jerusalem.
When he ended his time among the Jews and visited the “other sheep”, signs were also given to the entire world that they might believe on his name.
The first shall be last and the last shall be first. First to the Jews then to the Gentiles, then to the Gentiles and next to the Jews. The times of the Gentiles fulfilled then on to the Jews.
So this time he is coming to the American continent. Signs will once again occur to testify of the world that he has come. Except this time, the inhabitants of the American continent will see him and have him among them first. The Jews will have also seen the signs, but not believe.
The difference between Christ’s coming to the Jews first at his birth and coming to the New Jerusalem in the last days is this. He came to the Jews a mortal man. When he comes to the New Jerusalem, he comes in his glory. So the earth will respond differently to his approach.
And just like before, signs will precede his appearance to the Jews also. Everything is reversed. Signs will be shown commemorating his appearance to both lands.
This explains why the world experiences the signs given in the sixth seal as related in D&C 87 “For not many days hence and the earth shall tremble and reel to and fro as a drunken man; and the sun shall hide his face, and shall refuse to give light; and the moon shall be bathed in blood; and the stars shall become exceedingly angry, and shall cast themselves down as a fig that falleth from off a fig-tree.”
Joseph Smith said these signs will precede the sign of his coming which the earth will interpret as comets colliding.
D&C 87 and Revelations 6 & 7 both testify that these signs happen in the sixth seal and are followed by the ½ hour of silence.
Christ does not unveil his face until later, as we see in D&C 87:95 “And there shall be silence in heaven for the space of half an hour; and immediately after shall the curtain of heaven be unfolded, as a scroll is unfolded after it is rolled up, and the face of the Lord shall be unveiled;”
We are to expect signs of both of his comings. Signs will be in the heavens above and the earth beneath. This is a repeat in reverse order of what happened previously, except he comes in his glory both times.
Here is the prophecy concerning his birth which illustrates that signs were shown.
(Helaman 14:3-7.)
3 And behold, this will I give unto you for a sign at the time of his coming; for behold, there shall be great lights in heaven, insomuch that in the night before he cometh there shall be no darkness, insomuch that it shall appear unto man as if it was day.
4 Therefore, there shall be one day and a night and a day, as if it were one day and there were no night; and this shall be unto you for a sign; for ye shall know of the rising of the sun and also of its setting; therefore they shall know of a surety that there shall be two days and a night; nevertheless the night shall not be darkened; and it shall be the night before he is born.
5 And behold, there shall a new star arise, such an one as ye never have beheld; and this also shall be a sign unto you.
6 And behold this is not all, there shall be many signs and wonders in heaven.
7 And it shall come to pass that ye shall all be amazed, and wonder, insomuch that ye shall fall to the earth……………………
12 And also that ye might know of the coming of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Father of heaven and of earth, the Creator of all things from the beginning; and that ye might know of the signs of his coming, to the intent that ye might believe on his name.

Re: The reversal of signs
Yes indeed
2 For behold, they rejected all the words of Ether; for he truly told them of all things, from the beginning of man; and that after the waters had areceded from off the face of this bland it became a choice land above all other lands, a chosen land of the Lord; wherefore the Lord would have that all men should cserve him who dwell upon the face thereof;
3 And that it was the place of the aNew Jerusalem, which should bcome down out of heaven, and the holy sanctuary of the Lord.
4 Behold, Ether saw the days of Christ, and he spake concerning a aNew Jerusalem upon this land.
5 And he spake also concerning the house of Israel, and the aJerusalem from whence bLehi should come—after it should be destroyed it should be built up again, a choly city unto the Lord; wherefore, it could not be a new Jerusalem for it had been in a time of old; but it should be built up again, and become a holy city of the Lord; and it should be built unto the house of Israel.
6 And that a aNew Jerusalem should be built up upon this land, unto the remnant of the seed of bJoseph, for which things there has been a ctype.
7 For as Joseph brought his father down into the land of aEgypt, even so he died there; wherefore, the Lord brought a remnant of the seed of Joseph out of the land of Jerusalem, that he might be merciful unto the seed of Joseph that they should bperish not, even as he was merciful unto the father of Joseph that he should perish not.
8 Wherefore, the remnant of the house of Joseph shall be built upon this aland; and it shall be a land of their inheritance; and they shall build up a holy bcity unto the Lord, like unto the Jerusalem of old; and they shall cno more be confounded, until the end come when the earth shall pass away.
9 And there shall be a anew heaven and a new earth; and they shall be like unto the old save the old have passed away, and all things have become new.
10 And then cometh the New Jerusalem; and blessed are they who dwell therein, for it is they whose garments are awhite through the blood of the Lamb; and they are they who are numbered among the remnant of the seed of Joseph, who were of the house of Israel.
11 And then also cometh the aJerusalem of old; and the inhabitants thereof, blessed are they, for they have been washed in the blood of the Lamb; and they are they who were scattered and gathered in from the four quarters of the earth, and from the bnorth countries, and are partakers of the fulfilling of the covenant which God made with their father, cAbraham.
12 And when these things come, bringeth to pass the scripture which saith, there are they who were afirst, who shall be last; and there are they who were last, who shall be first.

Thanks that is the scripture I was looking for to help SRSmith realize that the NJ is built first and then the Old Jerusalem is rebuilt. The inhabitants of NJ are washed first, then the inhabitants of OJ.
