Warning your neighbor

Post by Mahonri »

Is it ever wise not to warn your neighbor? When and why?

Thanks

Behold, I sent you out to testify and warn the people, and it becometh every man who hath been warned to warn his neighbor

It’s kind of like this; If there is a train coming down the track and you’re sitting on the track, shame on you for not seeing it, and shame on me for not telling you about it.

I try to warn when the opportunity presents itself, there’s no time like the precious present, and because we’re all on the same ark here!

Depends on the neighbor.....with media hype like this going around....you might get turned in if you give to stiff of a warning....

or if your neighbor is like this one you might just pass on by...

Good question, since in the U.S. it is becoming less and less acceptable to show any kind of disapproval of others' actions, (unless of course, they are disrespectful enough to bring up the subject of God).

Here in Korea, it is seen as a duty to correct those who are younger or of lower social status when you see them doing something wrong. I believe this is the better way. However, you should balance boldness with tact (a quality Koreans don't seem to recognize  ). And of course, in the church we are advised to warn our neighbor (everyone) rather than someone whose seen as lower in social status.

Yes.

HOWEVER, different neighbors are capable of accepting different levels of warning. For some, explaining the basic commandments is all they could bare/accept/understand. For others, deeper doctrines may be apprpriate. (Don't cast your pears before swine.)

Why don't you think the prophet tells us everything he knows during general conference? Because the general church population couldn't/wouldn't accept or comply with the messagae that he COULD give us.

I think if the Prophet were to tell us everything he knows during general conference, or even have it mentioned in regional or stake conferences, the American members would be about as receptive and responsive as we were back in the days of President McKay, President J. Reuben Clark, President Romney and Ezra Taft Benson while an apostle and later as President of the Church. Also, when the LDGs got wind of what the Prophet might say, they would, I believe, come down on the Church and hell would come with them.

Durangout I think is right; much of the general church population couldn't/wouldn't accept or comply with the messagae that he COULD give us. And others wouldn't know or couldn't figure out what to do about it. Personally, I think the instructions we have been given are clear and good.

Heck, you're right. When President Hinckley asked the membership to read the Book of Mormon by the end of the year and gave good reasons for it. Less than 10% complied.

They have been talking for years about getting food storage: each time lessening the amount of it. I wonder if it started at seven years storage, then went down to two years, and then to one year, to 6 months, to 3 months to 1 month to 72 hour kits.

Wow... now that's sad.

Warn only when you are prompted by the Spirit. And be bold, but not overbearing, that they may feel your love towards them, so that the both of you may share the spiritual experience together.

Probably referring to D&C 121:41-44, the language is pretty close.

I agree totally with this. Warning your neighbor about what? obeying commandments or conspiracy type hush hush things? I have never been prompted to talk of "warning-type" conspiracy topics in Fast meeting or a lesson except to testify of food storage and reiterate what live prophets have said about food storage and share my own personal testimony of it. People don't accept conspiracy topics generally unless they have heeded the counsel to have food storage....there is a correlation there. For some reason, they are more open to being warned if they have food storage. There is warning your neighbor and then there is sharing the mysteries (personal revelation) that God has revealed to you. If you want more, you need to be able to keep a secret. You also need to be bold when you are prompted to speak up. IMHO.

Well said and so true. Line upon line...precept upon precept.
