silence in heaven about the space of half an hour

I have read most of the posts regarding the opening of the 7th seal on one thread or another proposing the opening of the 7th seal Sept. 23, 2011 or Dec. 21, 2012, etc. Some believe the 7th seal all ready opened and others offer further possibilities. I bring this up just so no one wastes their time telling me what someone else has posted about their belief on when this event will take place (i.e. Dr. Cohen's theory, etc.).
So anyway,
Revelation 8:1 intrigues me.
1 And when he had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour.
This verse stands alone. To me it jumps out as being isolated like each step in a recipe. It reads like it's step 1 in a recipe. For example, When the 7th seal opens, there is silence in heaven for about half an hour, period. Next, step 2,...so on and so on...(the chapter doesn't necessarily read strictly like steps in a recipe, but I think using this example helps put perspective on how the chapter reads).
In a lot of the posts concerning the 7th seal I've read and also other 7th seal information in books, etc. the silence in heaven sometimes gets overlooked. Sometimes it is addressed, but usually about whether the half hour is 22 years of our time being derived from the Lords time or not. And then sometimes, what is going to happen during that 22 year span.
Obviously I don't know what the verse means, but I think if it is silence in heaven for 22 years, it's important to figure out and not overlook the "silence" part of the verse. After all, that is the most important word in the verse!
What happens for the space of about a half hour?
Answer: Silence
So what is this silence?
Some have suggested that, in their opinion, they didnt think God would be silent and not have contact with His children for 22 years in these last days.
I agree. I don't think thats what the silence means.
Other theories suggest that during the 22 years all the woes will be poured out upon the earth and the angel will sound their trumps.
This definitely could be a possibility.
However, this doesn't seem to be silence in heaven for 22 years, it's more like a big SHOUT to the world.
What if the silence in heaven means that the Lord will stay His hand for the space of the first 22 years of the opening of the 7th seal, after which the silence will be broken, the trumps will sound, and the heavens will be silent no more, pouring out the wrath of God.
Maybe the 7th seal hasn't opened yet. Or, maybe the 7th seal opened right around the new millenium and we are in the silence waiting while the Heavens prepare...
Revelation 7
1 And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree.
2 And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea,
3 Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads.
Rev. 8:1&6 And when he had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour.
And the seven angels which had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound.
