What's with the "submarines in the Pacific" situation? Don't our subs surface all the time?

Oh, and then there are the "strategic Bombers" testing airspace...

yes and no.

they like to "run silent, run deep" and spend most of their time under water. Sure they surface, but I think the thing the article takes notice of is that they are surfacing and making themselves known in areas they don't usually hang out in.

And that they surfaced at the same time more or less... obviously shows planning and coordination.

Nuclear fast attack and missile subs can stay submerged indefinitely, they only need to surface to resupply their stores. They have desalination plants and oxygen scrubbers that provide potable water and the needed oxygen for the crew.

The only reason they will surface would be for resupply or to send a message. Our new nuclear subs are stealthy enough so that they can not be tracked by passive sonar. Even with the active sonar they are extremely difficult to locate given their special coating on the exterior hull as well as using the thermal layers of the ocean to help conceal their location.

The very fact of surfacing in these different locations around the world was meant to send a message and the fact that they were able to do it with out being detected was another message sent to our global friends. Any time Russia, China or any nation who’s friendship with the US is in question are able to locate a US sub you will hear about it all over their news media system.

There is a cat and mouse game that is played under the surface of the ocean between Russia and the US subs. The Chinese are trying to catch up and often will play the game. The Russians subs have made some amazing advancements and are getting very close to meeting the capabilities of our own subs.

The very fact of a US missile sub surfacing in South Korea is not only a message to China and Russia, but North Korea as well. We just told them that we have more subs in the area and we have every one of their subs and surface vessels targeted as well as important strategic land base targets. Although US subs operate independently, they are always coordinating their patrol area with other subs and there are always more subs.

This is an obvious display of force and is meant to send a message. With all that is going on in the area around the Persian Gulf, it is obvious to me that the US is positioning themselves for some type of operation.

I think Admiral Winnefield sounds like a dunce. I hardly think the Russians are testing our airspace for propaganda reasons. It is very stupid of the admiral not to respond to these probes. I think someday, one of these probes will be the real thing and this dunce may not even respond until it is far too late. He seems to have swallowed the Russians tactic of trying to make us think they are weak when they are not. The admiral really should read Sun Tsu's Art of War. If he has ( I would be surprised if he hasn't), he should take it to heart.

I really hope he isn't as stupid as he makes himself to appear.
