RON PAUL Misses the Mark

I know there are lots of Ron Paul fans here. I'm not one of them. I believe he has
SOME good ideas but for the most part I believe he misses the mark especially on
2nd Ammendment issues. He has a tendency to 'throw the baby out with the bathwater.'
The following update from the NRA is indicative of Ron Paul's
lack of commitment on our right to bear arms.

NRA-Backed Excise Bill Overwhelmingly Passes U.S. House

Friday, July 02, 2010

On June 29, the NRA-backed Firearms Excise Tax Improvement Act (H.R. 5552) easily passed in the House by an overwhelming bipartisan vote of 412-6.

Sponsored by Congressmen Ron Kind (D-WI) and Paul Ryan (R-WI), H.R. 5552 will change the excise tax payment schedule for firearm and ammunition manufacturers from biweekly to quarterly. H.R. 5552 complies with statutory “Pay-Go” rules and does not establish a new tax or add to the federal deficit.

The Pittman-Robertson Wildlife Restoration Trust Fund, established by enactment of federal legislation in 1937, authorizes the development of wildlife restoration projects across the country. Under current law, firearm and ammunition manufacturers pay excise taxes into this fund biweekly. All other manufacturers pay their respective excise taxes quarterly. The frequency of excise tax payments by firearm and ammunition manufacturers is a burden on the industry.

Changing to a quarterly excise tax payment schedule will allow manufacturers to reinvest funds into researching and developing new products, purchasing new manufacturing machinery and creating jobs. To correct this issue and also comply with “Pay-Go” standards, the cost of H.R. 5552 is completely offset. The Joint Committee on Taxation has estimated that this legislation will create a net revenue increase of $4 million over ten years. Accordingly, H.R. 5552 will increase funding for wildlife conservation through the Pittman-Robertson Wildlife Restoration Trust Fund.

This legislation will neither raise taxes nor exempt firearm and ammunition manufacturers from paying federal excise taxes into the Pittman-Robertson Wildlife Restoration Trust Fund.

While fourteen were absent for this vote on Tuesday, only six congressmen—John Conyers (D-Mich.), Sam Farr (D-Calif.), Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio), Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.), Ron Paul (R-Texas) and Maxine Waters (D-Calif.)—voted against H.R. 5552. Just one of many disagreements with his views.

Haven't read the bill yet, but I'm sure if RP didn't vote for it- it probably didn't pass the Constitutional sniff test.

I also have major concerns with any piece of Legislation that the NRA gets behind, they have shown a habit of being a "compromise" organization that has basically become like all the other "special interests" groups- they will roll over for $$$$ and power.

Don't believe me?

If you want a real no-compromise gun-rights group, I would suggest Jews for the Preservation of Firearms ownership or Gun owners of America

http://www.jpfo.org/
http://gunowners.org/

Interestingly enough - when I went to the website of gunowners of America right at the top it has a quote from Ron Paul that says:
"the only no-compromise gun lobby in Washington"

Maybe Ron just smells a rat (the NRA) when he sees one?

I realize that saying anything bad about the NRA is like denying the Christ for a Conservative, but truth is stranger than fiction when it comes to the actual impact of the NRA lately.

This may be a tough read for you, if you are a fan of the NRA- but's it's very telling:

This isn't even a 2nd Amendment issue. The bill does nothing regarding an individuals right to bear firearms. It was a change in how oftent hey pay taxes. Big whoop.

If this is the best you got as far as finding something about Ron Paul to complain about, get serious. I would take his vote against the authorization to invade Iraq and that would far outweigh a hundred of these nitpick issues. (and frankly, lnowing Ron Paul, there was likely a valid and constitutionally sound concern for him not voting for this.

Funny... these are almost exactly the words that came to mind last night when I saw Ron Paul on CNN defending Republican Party Chairman Michael Steele and said to myself "Why would a guy like Ron Paul come to the defense of a guy like Michael Steele?"

Because He stands for principles, not politics. Just like when he defended the President when he was being attacked for the Oil Spill.

Too bad we only have a small handful that are guided by principals rather than politics.

Yeah Ron Paul gained a lot of power by defending a party chairman whose head was being called for. I am sure there was big $$$$ in it for him to.
