Did your Ward talk about....

I am just curious if your Ward covered or mentioned the martyrdom of the Prophet at all today, it being the anniversary of his martyrdom in 1844

Of course not. It isn't celebrated until October 15th. It's like Christmas or Easter or Washington's Birthday. :D

They did in our Ward. Not talks, but mention, which actually gave way for personal contemplation. The ward choir even sang "A Poor Wayfairing Man of Grief" with the original hymntune which was very thought provoking.

Our ward choir, led by my wife as the choir director, gave the most rousing rendition of "Praise to the Man" that I have ever heard. My 13 year old son was on the piano. After that, not a word was said about it.

The topic of the sacrament meeting talks were geared around modern day prophets. Each talk mentioned and honored the Prophet Joseph Smith and President Thomas S. Monson. The special musical number was the most beautiful arrangement of Praise to the Man I've ever heard. The Prophet Joseph Smith was quoted in each lesson I attended.

Of course, the primary focus of all the meetings was on the Savior, as it should be. The martyrdom of the Prophet was mentioned and appropriately remembered, I believe, though it was obvious it was not intended to be the primary focus.

No, the topic was priesthood power in the family and based on Pres Packer's conference address this past April. But thanks for the reminder anyway--I will bring it up for discussion at the dinner table tonight.

I was mentioned in our ward by the stake president and the bishop.

There was a changing of the guard in Elders quorom and so the new Prez spoke about him for the main talk. He happens to be very intelligent in the life of Joseph Smith. The hardest part was when he talked he told us that "exactly 155 years ago just about this time of day". That really hit home when I contemplated the time of day that he returned to Father. It wasn't just some date it was when his earthly mission was complete and sealed by bullets at about the exact same time I was sitting there safely taking the sacrament with my family. I can scarcely imagine the thoughts in ones mind as you left your family knowing that you were not coming back. His testimony walked him down that road. My hope is to have half the faith and conviction to stare death in the face. Praise to the Man indeed!
