The Proper Way to Share News Articles on the Forum

Post by creator »

Just a reminder about the proper way to share news articles and other content on the forum.
  • First, you are expected to follow copyright laws and any other applicable laws when posting content on this forum.
The laws are complex but basically the "Fair Use" rule of the copyright law allows you to quote an article for commentary and educational purposes.
  • If you're sharing content from another website, the best practice is to simply post a Title, Excerpt or Summary, and Link to the full content.
  • Do not post the full content of the article. You should only be posting significant portions of someone's copyrighted content IF you are giving commentary on each portion that you are quoting (or if you have permission).
  • Since this is a discussion forum, include your own commentary as well. Tell us what you think about the topic, why you are sharing the article, etc.
  • Posts that violate the rules/guidelines may be deleted without notice.
Feel free to share additional insights on this topic.

TL;DR: If you are going to share news articles on LDSFF, share an excerpt or summary then link to the full content. Do not post the full content of the article. Add your own commentary as well.

I'll sticky this in the News sub-forum.

Thanks for the reminder. It's not only better to do as you say, from a legal standpoint, but as someone reading a post, it's much easier to follow along if the only part posted is the part the poster is commenting on. Long quotes are extremely difficult to read (and I'm usually on a laptop, not a phone. It must be worse for people reading on their phones).

Do you get contacted by people complaining about copyright violations? Just curious.

Not recently (It has happened occasionally). I just thought it would be a good post to "sticky" in the News sub-forum, as a reminder.
