LDS Prophet Says Don't Vote For Mitt Romney

and here's why...

J. Reuben Clark, Jr. wrote:Now, I am not caring today, for myself, anything at all about a political party tag. So far as I am concerned, I want to know what the man stands for ...When I find out these things, when I know who it is who should receive my support, and I care not what his party tag is...Today, our duty transcendsparty allegiance; our duty today is allegiance to the Constitution as it was given to us by the Lord. (J. Reuben Clark, Jr., CR 10/62:8)
George Washington wrote:They serve to organize factions...to put in the place of the delegated will of the nation the will of the party, often a small but artful and enterprising minority...Let me... warn you in the most solemn manner against the baneful effects of the spirity of party...The alternate domination of one faction over another, shapened by the spirit of revenge...has perperated the most horrid enormities...It [the contention between the parties] serves always to distract the public councils and enfeeble the public administration. (Washington's Farewell Address)
Ezra Taft Benson wrote:"We honor these partners [friends outside the Church] because their devotion to correct principles overshadowed their devotion to popularity, party , or personalities.

"We honor our founding fathers of this republic for the same reason. God raised up these patriotic partners to perform their mission, and he called them "wise men." (see D&C 101:80.) The First Presidency acknowledged that wisdom when they gave us the guideline a few years ago of supporting political candidates "who are truly dedicated to the Constitution in the tradition of our Founding Fathers." (Deseret News, November 2, 1964.) . . .

"Our wise founders seemed to understand, better than most of us, our own scripture, which states that "it is the nature and disposition of almost all men, as soon as they get a little authority . . . they will immediately begin to exercise unrighteous dominion." (D&C 121:39.)

"To help prevent this, the founders knew that our elected leaders should be bound by certain fixed principles. Said Thomas Jefferson: "In questions of power, then, let no more be heard of confidence in man, but bind him down from mischief by the chains of the Constitution."

"These wise founders, our patriotic partners, seemed to appreciate more than most of us the blessings of the boundaries that the Lord set within the Constitution, for he said, "And as pertaining to law of man, whatsoever is more or less than this, cometh of evil." (D&C 98:7.)

"In God the founders trusted, and in his Constitution—not in the arm of flesh. "O Lord," said Nephi, "I have trusted in thee, and I will trust in thee forever. I will not put my trust in the arm of flesh; . . . cursed is he that putteth his trust in man or maketh flesh his arm."" (2 Nephi 4:34.) ("Civic Standards for the Faithful Saints" 59-60)
Ezra Taft Benson wrote:...each priesthood holder should use his influence in the community to resist the erosion process which is taking place in our political and economic life. He should use the political party of his choice to express his evaluation of important issues. He should see that his party is working to preserve freedom, not destroy it. He should join responsible local groups interested in promoting freedom and free competitive enterprise, in studying political issues, appraising the voting records and proposed programs, and writing to members of Congress, promoting good men in public office, and scrutinizing local, state, and federal agencies to see that the will of the people is being carried out. He should not wait for the Lord's servants to give instruction for every detail once they have announced the direction in which the priesthood should go. Each member should exercise prayerful judgment and then act. [Ezra Taft Benson - God, Family, Country]
Ezra Taft Benson wrote:We must be devoted to sound principles in word and deed: principle above party, principle above pocketbook, principle above popularity. [Ezra Taft Benson - God, Family, Country]
Hyrum Smith wrote:"We engage in the election the same as in any other principle; you are to vote for good men, and if you do not do this it is a sin; to vote for wicked men, it would be sin . Choose the good and refuse the evil. Men of false principles have preyed upon us like wolves upon helpless lambs.…. Let every man use his liberties according to the Constitution. Don't fear man or devil; electioneer with all people, male and female, and exhort them to do the thing that is right. We want a President of the United States, not a party President, but a President of the whole people…and…. Have a President who will maintain every man in his rights ." (Hyrum Smith, 1844, DHC-6:323)
Henry D. Moyle wrote:"No political party is justified to continue in existence unless it clearly states the principles which it advocates, the platform upon which its candidates stand, and then with integrity, when and if elected, carry out those principles and live up to that platform. Except that be the case, we as Latter-day Saints should not align ourselves to any party, because we do not have the basis upon which we can make an intelligent decision. We must know what they stand for before we can favor them with our vote." (Henry D. Moyle, CR-4/52:36)
Joseph Smith wrote:In the next canvas we shall be influenced by no party consideration...the partisans in this county who expect to divide the friends of humanity and equal rights will find themselves mistakes -- we care not a fig for Whig or Democrat; they are both alike to us; but we shall go for our friends, our tried friends, and that cause of human liberty which is the cause of God. We are aware that 'divide and conquer' is the watchword with many, but with us it cannot be done -- we love too well -- we have suffered too much to be easily duped -- we have no cat's paws amongst us. [Times & Seasons - 3:651]

A most timely and educational post, but why do I get the feeling that Bob will be here momentarily to tell us why we need to vote for the priesthood holder? :ymblushing:

This thread has been up for over a week and only has 3 replies... I wonder what would happen if I add "Mitt Romney" to the title?

I didn't need to be reminded.

A letter I wrote and sent to Brother Romney in October 2010:

As members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, you and I, and for that matter, all adult members, are under a divinely mandated obligation to defend, uphold, and abide by the principles of the Constitution of the United States. And since the Lord put His “stamp of approval” on our Constitution in 1833, I suggest that we are responsible to the Constitution as it stood in that year, which included the Bill of Rights and the 11th and 12th Amendments.

Many laws have been passed and many programs instituted by our government that are diametrically contrary to our Constitution, especially as the Lord and the American Founding Fathers intended that it should be understood. There has been an alarming increase in the abandoning of the ideals that constitute the foundation of that Constitution
.
In April 1966, Elder Marion G. Romney, speaking in the General Priesthood meeting, included the statement “When Zion is redeemed, as it most certainly shall be, it will be redeemed under a government and by a people strictly observing those ‘just and holy principles’ of the Constitution that accord to men their God-given moral agency, including the right to private property.” Elder Romney further stated his prayer “That we will develop the understanding, the desire, and the courage born of the Spirit, to eschew socialism and to support and to sustain, in the manner revealed and as interpreted by the Lord, those just and holy principles embodied in the Constitution of the United States for the protection of all flesh, in the exercise of their God-given agency.”

The Mormon people have, I believe, the most serious responsibility of any people to prepare a remnant that will ultimately restore the principles of the U.S. Constitution as approved by the Lord to our government. And because of your experience in government and your knowledge of these principles, you are probably the best person in the Church at this time to rally Latter-day Saints and lead the charge in preparation for that time when people will want to live under the principles of the U.S. Constitution that the American Founding Fathers and the Lord intended us to live under. Please keep these things in mind as you proceed in your future political plans.

That was the 3rd of 3 letters I sent to Romney. No replies were forthcoming.

In the LDS faith, prophets, or presidents of the church, are the mouthpieces of God. Prophets speak for God, and one can uncover political beliefs beginning with two founding fathers of Mormonism, Brigham Young and Joseph Smith:
•Smith, Young, and many other prophets revealed to their followers that “The time will come when the destiny of the nation will hang upon a single thread. At that critical juncture, this people will step forth and save it from the threatened destruction.”

I believe the quote was that IF it were to be saved it would be by the ELDERS of ZION.

I am quite certain that a recent prophet stated that the Constitution would NOT be saved in Washington D.C.

But, by all means, keep chugging the Kool-Aid if that works for you.

Okay, but how does an image of Mitt Romney next to Joseph Smith have anything to do with what you said? Perhaps a contrast of a candidate for pres. that would deserve our vote (Joseph) and one that doesn't fit the standard/principles taught by Joseph (Mitt). hmmm. okay.

Ezra Taft Benson said in General Conference October, 1961:

“It is no wonder that the Prophet Joseph said—even though he knew he would suffer martyrdom in this land—‘The Constitution of the United States is a glorious standard; it is founded in the wisdom of God. It is a heavenly banner.’
Yet, according to his contemporaries, he foresaw the time when the destiny of the nation would be in danger and would hang as by a thread. Thank God he did not see the thread break. He also indicated the important part that this people should yet play in standing for the principles embodied in these sacred documents—the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.
In connection with attack on the United States, the Lord told the Prophet Joseph Smith there would be an attempt to overthrow the country by destroying the Constitution. Joseph Smith predicted that the time would come when the Constitution would hang, as it were, by a thread, and at that time “this people will step forth and save it from the threatened destruction.”
It is my conviction that the elders of Israel, widely spread over the nation will at that crucial time successfully rally the righteous of our country and provide the necessary balance of strength to save the institutions of constitutional government.”29
President John Taylor, while in Logan, Utah spoke on Sunday afternoon, August 31, 1879 and said that:
“…the day is not far distant when this nation will be shaken from centre to circumference. And now, you may write it down, any of you, and I will prophesy it in the name of God. And then will be fulfilled that prediction to be found in one of the revelations given through the Prophet Joseph Smith. Those who will not take up their sword to fight against their neighbor must needs flee to Zion for safety. And they will come, saying, we do not know anything of the principles of your religion, but we perceive that you are an honest community; you administer justice and righteousness, and we want to live with you and receive the protection of your laws, but as for your religion we will talk about that some other time. Will we protect such people? Yes, all honorable men. When the people shall have torn to shreds the Constitution of the United States the Elders of Israel will be found holding it up to the nations of the earth and proclaiming liberty and equal rights to all men, and extending the hand of fellowship to the oppressed of all nations. This is part of the programme, and as long as we do what is right and fear God, he will help us and stand by us under all circumstances.”

Joseph F Smith in General Conference October, 1912 said:

“Now, these are the commandments of God, the principles contained in these commandments of the great Eternal are the principles that underly the Constitution of our country and all just laws. Joseph Smith, the prophet, was inspired to affirm and ratify this truth, and he further predicted that the time would come, when the Constitution of our country would hang as it were by a thread, and that the Latter-day Saints above all other people in the world would come to the rescue of that great and glorious palladium of our liberty. We cannot brook the thought of it being torn into shreds, or destroyed, or trampled under foot and ignored by men.” 31
Can there be any doubt in the mind of any honest investigator that the Constitution of the United States holds a special place in the hearts and minds of Latter-day Saints? In every instance when the speaker refers to the Constitution hanging by a thread he also refers to the continuation of the government and the Constitution of the United States. It cannot possibly be inferred in any instance that the government will be overthrown by or changed in any manner so as to allow the Elders of the LDS Church to take over the government. It is true, however, that it is prophesied in every instance that the Elders of the Church will act to protect and preserve the Constitution.

It is very clear that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints does not believe that there will be a time when the government of the United States or the world will be assumed by the Church or its members. Rather it is the clear expectation that the Constitution and the government of the United States will survive the future predicted crisis because of the support that will be given by the Elders of the Church.

I see no guarantee for the government - indeed, if the Constitution were upheld and saved, it would mean the destruction of the current regime (both parties).

But I have read enough of your posts to know you disagree (Andrew).

What say ye Brian? I believe Mitt Romney is one of the Elders Joseph Smith is referring to. Hence the picture.

George Q. Cannon, on November 20, 1881 speaking in the Salt Lake Assembly Hall, said:
“. . . The day will come-and this is another prediction of Joseph Smith’s-I want to remind you of it, my brethren and sisters, when good government, constitutional government-liberty-will be found among the Latter-day Saints, and it will be sought for in vain elsewhere; when the Constitution of this land and republican government and institutions will be upheld by this people who are now so oppressed and whose destruction is now sought so diligently. The day will come when the Constitution, and free government under it, will be sustained and preserved by this people.”27
Joseph Smith, while unjustly imprisoned in Liberty Jail, wrote the members of the Church on March 25, 1839 and taught that:
“The Constitution of the United States is a glorious standard; it is founded in the wisdom of God. It is a heavenly banner; it is to all those who are privileged with the sweets of its liberty, like the cooling shades and refreshing waters of a great rock in a thirsty and weary land. It is like a great tree under whose branches men from every clime can be shielded from the burning rays of the sun. . . .”28
In the Doctrine and Covenants we learn:
Have mercy, O Lord, upon all the nations of the earth; have mercy upon the rulers of our land; may those principles, which were so honorably and nobly defended, namely, the Constitution of our land, by our fathers, be established forever. (D. & C. 109:54.)

If the Constitution is going to be saved at the national level, then why will those who do not wish to take the sword against their neighbor need to flee to Zion?

How can we both read the same things and get such a different message? The message I see clearly and repeatedly is that the principles of the Constitution will be upheld by THIS PEOPLE/Elders of Israel. People will flee to live with us, not to join our religion but because just laws and principles will be upheld - again, if this is at a national level, why the need to flee to the Saints?

It's clear to me - crystal clear - that the Constitution will be torn to shreds by the nation as a whole, and will only be upheld at the regional and community level. And Romney has given plenty of reason to not only doubt, but to be incredulous of the claim that he is or intends to be a saviour of the Constitution.

Oh, and I do actually chug Kool-Aid, just the literal kind, not the ideological, left/right false paradigm kind.

Andrew, here is the talk by Pres Benson. There is a lot of misinformation, that has been going around for many years, about "the constitution hanging by thread".

Please note Pres Benson says he belives the stars and stripes will still be waving over this people, when the Savior comes his audience is Mormons. He also says it will likley take bloodshed to save it. He also says it won't be saved in Washington.

I would like to invite you to join us, the people who will preserve the principles of the constituion intact and will stand firm in not voting for those who do not honor it or freedom.
