The Naked Capitalist

Post by lundbaek »

The Naked Capitalist by W. Cleon Skousen is basically a review of Prof. Carroll Quigley’s “Tragedy And Hope”. The intent of this work appears to be to call attention to the “volume of evidence that the highest centers of political and economic power have been forcing the entire human race toward a global, socialist, dictatorial-oriented society.....that the world hierarchy of the dynastic super-rich is out to take over the entire planet, doing it with Socialistic legislation where possible, but having no reluctance to use Communist revolution where necessary.”

Skousen’s opening shot should at least arouse one’s interest: 'I think the Communist conspiracy is merely a branch of a much bigger conspiracy'. The above statement was made to this reviewer several years ago by Bella Dodd, a former member of the National Committee of the U.S. Communist Party. Dr. Dodd said she first became aware of some mysterious super-leadership right after World War II when the U.S. Communist Party had difficulty getting instructions from Moscow on several vital matters requiring immediate attention. The American Communist hierarchy was told that any time they had an emergency of this kind they should contact any one of three designated persons at the Waldorf Towers. Dr. Dodd noted that whenever the Party obtained instructions from any of these three men, Moscow always ratified them. What puzzled Dr. Dodd was the fact that not one of these three contacts was a Russian. Nor were any of them Communists. In fact, all three were extremely wealthy American capitalists. Pg. 1.

I have further personal correspondence from Dr. Skousen on this subject, basically telling me that Bella Dodd never knew who the wealthy American capitalists” were. Several years ago Dr. Skousen, in reply to my inquiry about Dr. Dodd having spoken of wealthy Americans who at times gave direction to the Communist Party USA right after World War 2, wrote to me:

...April 23, 1962. Bella Dodd told me that while she was working as a member of the national committee of the Communist Party, she learned from William Z. Foster, head of the American Communist Party, that if they couldn’t make a decision on any particular problem they should go to the Waldorf Astoria for instructions. Their courier always took these inquiries to Arthur J. Goldsmith. However, she did not know whether he was one of the three or merely a go between who delivered the message to the three wealthy contacts and then later brought back the answer.

The book also shows how “...the United Nations charter was written by a State Department - Soviet Union coalition of strategists who specifically designed the UN so it could eventually override the sovereign independence of its member nations and subject them to the Marxist-dominated World Court and the Marxist-directed military forces of the United Nations.”

"Why do some of the richest peple in the world support communism and socialism? Why would they support what appears to be the pathway to their own destruction? Dr. Carroll Quigley of Harvard, Princeton and Georgetown Universities states that he has been associated with many of these dynastic families of the super-rich. He therefore writes as an authority on the world's secret power structure. His answers to the above questions may astonish you."
(W. Cleon Skousen, in "The Naked Capitalist", a review of "Tragedy And Hope")

Another review

Another reviewer writes:

The Naked Capitalist, written by Cleon Skousen is a commentary on Quigley's book Tragedy and Hope. Both describe the story of how these money masters have shaped vast, secret pockets of power, through a network of banks, to control the economies and governments of the world. Skousen asks why Quigley would want to expose these money masters, if he agrees with their goals? "Obviously," writes Skousen, "disclosing the existence of a mammoth power network which is trying to take over the world could not help but arouse the vigorous resistance of millions of people who are its intended victims. So why did Dr. Quigley write this book?"

The answer, according to Skousen, is that Quigley wants to show that "It is now too late for the little people to turn back the tide. In a spirit of kindness Quigley is therefore urging them not to fight the noose which is already around their necks. He feels certain that those who do will only choke themselves to death. On the other hand, those who go along will eventually find themselves in a man-made millennium of peace and prosperity. All through his book Dr. Quigley assures us that we can trust these benevolent, well-meaning men who are secretly operating behind the scenes. THEY are the HOPE of the world. All who resist them represent TRAGEDY. Hence, the title for his book.

Yet Quigley forgets the admonition of "By Their Fruits Shall Ye Know Them." These benevolent men also claim responsibility for installing some of the most ruthless and brutal governments in history, governments that killed hundreds of millions of men women and children and precipitated at least two global wars and countless regional conflicts. Nor does Quigley mention the ruthless and murderous efforts of these men over the past 200 years at wrestling control of the world's natural resources from the hands of common people into corporate conglomerates. They have even caused global depressions in order to obtain greater control over governments and industry. Their motive in all cases is to make people subservient and relinquish their freewill. To become willing to accept any government that stops the slaughter and provides security. There is also no mention that these same people plan for a reduction in Global Population by 95%.

"Anyone reading Dr. Quigley's book "Tragedy and Hope" will have little difficulty detecting the tremendous self-esteem from the author. He considers himself not only an 'insider' but a member of the intellectual elite among the insiders. He feels the forces of total global control are now sufficiently entrenched where they can reveal their true identity and historical significance without fear of being successfully overturned. Sounding almost like Karl Marx, Quigley expresses the utmost contempt for members of the American middleclass who think they can preserve what he calls their 'petty-bourgeois' property rights and constitutional privileges. But Quigley claims the middle class dimwits keep missing the target by aiming at Communist Governments and Left-wing radicals, when the real power behind these movements are Wealthy Capitalists. The very people that everyone thinks would have the most to lose if communism rises to power. Yet these same capitalist have financed a variety of socialist dictators, revolutionaries and subversive politicians in order to regulate and control their activities and use them as a threat and change agents when appropriate. They are extremely adept at play both sides against each other.

"The real value of Tragedy and Hope," writes Skousen, "is not so much as a 'history of the world in our time' (as its subtitle suggests) but rather as a bold and boastful admission by Dr. Quigley that there actually exists a relatively small but powerful group which has succeeded in acquiring a choke-hold on the affairs of practically the entire human race." Skousen says that if he had written such a book revealing this conspiracy, it would have been classified as the ranting of some lunatic. But Quigley is an establishment intellectual and reveals the inner workings and history of the Money Masters with vivid detail in his book.

Anyone familiar with the Biblical writings of John's Apocalypse might have suspected that modern history would eventually contain the account of a gigantic complex of political and economic power which would cover the whole earth. John predicted that the human race would be subjected to a ruthless, world-wide conglomerate of dictatorial authority which would attempt to make all men subservient to it or be killed (Revelations 13: 15). He said it would compel all men, "both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond," to be identified with it (Rev. 13: 16). John also referred to its economic grip on humanity and said that unless a person is identified with its monopoly network, 'no man might buy or sell' (13: 17).

Dr. Quigley assures us that this type of global power structure is on the verge of becoming a total reality. He points out that during the past two centuries, while the people of the world were gradually winning their political freedom from the dynastic monarchs of Europe, the major banking families of Europe and America were actually reversing this emancipation process by setting up new dynasties of political control through the formation of international financial and industrial combines.

Dr. Quigley points out that these banking dynasties had learned over the years that all governments must have sources of revenue from which to borrow in times of' emergency. They also learned that by providing such funds from their own private resources, they could make both kings and democratic leaders tremendously subservient to their will. It has proven to be a most effective means of controlling political appointments and deciding political issues."

Through control of currency and credit, these financial combines have been able to buy any corporation they feel is necessary to control and thereby regulate the means of production for most critical goods and services. Likewise, their power extends to the major media which it owns and controls as their own propaganda machine. They continue to promote centralized authoritarian government from politicians pretending to be both Left and Right wing in their values. The voting public seesaws back and forth between these so called political parties yet can see no change except increased government growth, regulation and control of the individual. Their latest and most colossal effort is to nullify the rights of private property under the guise of environmental protection, when in fact the corporations these financial combines control continue to be the most egregious polluters of the planet.

When appropriate, the Money Masters stage or permit attacks to be perpetrated by radical groups or rogue nations they secretly support and finance. These attacks justify government mobilization and further invasion of privacy while limiting individual freedoms under the guise of protecting the security of the state. It is a technique they call "Order out of Chaos." They create the problem and then provide the solution which is already planned for us. French Author Anatole Thibault (1844-1924) once said, "A people living under the perpetual menace of war and invasion is very easy to govern. It demands no social reforms. It does not haggle over expenditures on armaments and military equipment. It pays without discussion, it ruins itself, and that is an excellent thing for the syndicates of financiers and manufacturers for whom patriotic terrors are an abundant source of gain."

Finally found a great copy of this online. The copy largely floating around the net has been a large, fuzzy, scanned-picture copy. This one is much better, cleaner, and smaller: http://bit.ly/HSBFWQ" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Edit: I think you need to sign in to download, so here's a better link: http://bit.ly/JdRT7Q" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Cleaning out my Fathers books and just found this one. Very interesting. Things have changed a lot since this thread was started. Professor Quigley thought it was too late to stop it. Would love to know what Cleon Skousen would have to say about todays news.

When did the noose on the dust jacket illustration of Carroll Quigley's Tragedy and Hope reprint put out by GSG & Associates go missing?

I bought a copy of Quigley's book reprinted by GSG in the early 90's - a tie-in to Skousen's The Naked Capitalist and of course Clinton's recently winning the presidential election - that featured a noose and a stopwatch on the front and Clinton's quote on the back. I gave it away to a history major friend of mine and didn't get another hardcopy until just a few years ago.

Of course I know the stopwatch-and-noose dust jacket wasn't on the original MacMillan edition but was a subsequent design used for reprints to appeal to readers who came to know of Quigley's book by way of Skousen's The Naked Capitalist

However, sometime over the last 20 years the dust jacket on the Skousen/Clinton tie-in edition has been modified to show only the stopwatch, not the noose, which entirely obfuscates the allusion to Skousen's "noose" quote above that inspired the reprint design in the first place!
