Voodoo exists in Haiti but it's very taboo in most parts of the country.

As I said elsewhere, cats regularly go missing anyway, and they also have little meat on them from what I can see. Some of them are mostly fluff.creator wrote: ↑September 12th, 2024, 10:43 pmI'm guessing that's most likely false propaganda. Re: If you could have a BBQ with any three LDSFF members who would they be?
Because cats are carnivores. Many are also used to keep pests down. (I don't tend to eat carnivores unless they're marine ones. One of the missionaries here a year or two back told me how he had eaten bear. I would have similar issues with it.)ransomme wrote: ↑September 13th, 2024, 5:20 amWhy is a cow ok but not a cat?Original_Intent wrote: ↑September 13th, 2024, 3:25 amWas meant in jest only. Why a hog but not a horse?
Because dogs are carnivores and carrion eaters. Many are also useful for various purposes including guarding, or at a stretch keeping lonely people company.
Because horses are working animals. You can't get a pig to do much work other than manure.
I have eaten horse in France though and have little guilt at doing so.

I put a Y for yes and N for no against all your ones:
I have eaten a lot of birds when I think about it.
Goat
Grouse
Guinea fowl
Hare
Partridge
Pheasant
Puffin
Quail
Seagull (eggs — never again!)
Rabbit
Snake (type unknown)
Squirrel (grey)
Yak
Ones I've never had:
* Peacock, crow, any kind of bird of prey
* Any kind of primate
* Most reptiles like lizards and tortoises
* Rats, mice
* Seal (but I know someone who has, former fisherman)
* Swan
* Whale/dolphin
* Human
* Most common household pets: Dog, cat, parrot, hamster, gerbil, guinea pig, parrot, ferret etc
* Apart from horse (and yak?) no other beasts of burden. So no donkey/camel/llama/alpaca/elephant
Plus the obvious chicken & turkey.ransomme wrote: ↑September 13th, 2024, 12:19 pm Hmm, here's my list of the top of my head,

I know next to nothing about Haitian culture. However, a rapid influx of people from another country would naturally bring a different culture element.
It seems likely this may include a subsistence living where animals are killed and eaten.

I think a fishing trip is in order. but...Lynn apparently is in TX? So....hopefully Lynn can get out west, I've got an aluminum boat with a trolling motor and a few good places to fish where we'll actually catch some good trout. (in Utah). I actually don't drink beer while fishing unless someone else feels the desire for it and then I'll pop one or two. My small boat will take four if anyone else is interested. No experience necessary . I have extra poles.Cruiserdude wrote: ↑September 8th, 2024, 12:34 pm TheChristian

There's actually a BUNCH of you that I'd bet we'd be real good friends if we knew each other in real life, or in person. I'm positive of that.
(and I already met and had a great time with a bunch of you at our get togethers, so I'm picking people I haven't met yet)
And if it's going fishing with a board member I'm DEFINITELY tagging along with Lynn going after that massive cat that has eluded him.

I'd be game in a heartbeat if I was still in Utah! You're Southern Utah, right? I'm out in southeast corner of Kansas on border of Okie and Misery() now and apparently this is an incredible catfishing location, which I had no idea of when I moved here a year ago. A few of the locals have told me about/shown me some pics of some HOGS, we're talking 40-50 pounders!! They're HUGE!!FrankOne wrote: ↑September 14th, 2024, 12:30 pmI think a fishing trip is in order. but...Lynn apparently is in TX? Hm Listing what animals we have eaten.
Assorted fish
Whale (it was in a can, so probably didn't taste like they really do)
Oysters (Ick! The smell makes me want to puke, but these were smoked and the flavor hidden enough that I managed to eat a tiny bit)
Mussels
Clams
Shrimp
Crab
Lobster
Crawdads
Octopus/squid/calamari
Assorted fish
Goat
Beef
Pork
Buffalo
Elk
Deer
Duck
I think maybe goose - am not sure.
Chicken
Turkey
Duck eggs/Chicken eggs
That's all I can think of.

Re: If you could have a BBQ with any three LDSFF members who would they be?
Whew! Another bear of a week. Had to finally mow outside of the Complex here this AM & trim out some newly budded trees. Looks like plenty of fallen branches out there to gather up. Hmm, I may need to get a mulcher & sell the stuff. I would not run out, for sure.
OK, back to Bar-B-Q. Since I was unable to obtain extra bottles of Dickey's "sauce" up in Waco on the 17th when I picked up the new flat bottom boat, I finally got to look online this AM. Found it. I think I paid somewhere around $6.99 to 7.99 a bottle back in October 2020 in Willis, Texas at Dickey's there.
Dickey's Pit Barbecue Sauce is at
<https://barbecueathome.com/products/dic ... ecue-sauce>
It seems they have a $50 minimum order.
for $9.99 a bottle. But I'm thinkin' of ordering the 12 pack for $99.99
As the recent College Station, TX franchise owner told me some 6 or so years ago, before they got shut down by HQ, people like our Bar-B-Q (hickory smoked on a pit), but they LOVE our sauce.
I was raised on hickory smoked meats by my Dad. My other back up for sauce is slightly sweeter, is Kraft Hickory smoked Bar-B-Q sauce. Many try to go for really spicy or hot Bar-B-Q sauce, but you wants something that enhances the flavor, not kill the taste buds. Dickey's stands right at that border, a slight warmth or spice, yet does not take you over the edge.
I recall once Ron gave me some baked or fried Gasper Goo (freshwater drum) one day at lunch, that he had caught. After 3 bites, I could not taste the fish anymore, as my tongue was so numb.
While mowing this morning, I saw many new sprouting hickory trees everywhere. I have a hickory tree right near the grills.
At some of my company fish fry-s, I would fry up catfish (Blues, Yellows, and Channels), Crappie (from Ron), and Tilapia. I'd even thrown some Tilapia fillets on a grill inside the cabinet door shop. Everybody got to where they wanted a bit of it all. I used to fry up the bullet or torpedo style hush puppies put out by HEB under HCF (Hill Country Far) brand. However, in the interim years after 2011, it seems they stopped making them. Bummer, as they fried up tender brown, yet fully cooked inside. So I had to switch to crinkle cut fries. Back in June, I found a new twist at a family fry- Ore-Ida mini tater tots deep fried. I even fried up some flounder filets, along with tilapia filets & of course a variety of catfish.
But I used to also slap a slab of big BlueCat on the grill for folks, you could eat it with ketchup or Bar-B-Q sauce. So if you come to a Bar-B-Q of mine, you just might also get to try out some Barbecued Catfish. It is better to use meat from larger Cats (to make sure you do not misunderstand, that is Catfish), as it holds better together than younger or tender smaller fish. Plus you have to have a special extra small grill holder, or some aluminum foil to prevent your fish to stay on the grills.
So, Frankone has an aluminum boat that holds 4. How long is it? Sounds bigger than a 12 footer. Do you have catfish there in Utah?
CruiserDude noted he was in southeastern Kansas. And you noted you had catfish there. Hmm, I may have passed thru there in my 1989 trip back to Texas from Missouri, as Joel dropped me off in South, hmm let me check. OOPS! I still have a plastic tub from the fish fry to clean up. Yep, it was Coffeeville or South Coffeeville, Kansas. about 10 AM to Noon. I was in Tulsa around 4 to 6 PM, Norman (outside of Oklahoma City) before Midnight. Then Ardmore about 4 to 4:30 AM. I was in Grand Prairie, Texas by daylight the next day, and driving someone else's car since Ardmore. That is a story in itself.
Anyway, here is the link to my Catfish Calendar on the Texas Fishing Forum. It is for YellowCats, BlueCats, and Gator Gars. Possibly ChannelCats too, but I did not study them in my research. In the September Calendar, I have the bit on the new flat bottom boat. The new motor from Amazon came in Monday, but I have yet to find time to open the box yet. I have to head to town to send daughter Helen some Western Union funds so she can pay her rent on Tuesday, then swing by Lowes to grab some more 2x4x8 footers (Treated) for the big back bedroom roof repair. That is one of the projects to finish before heading for Egypt.

I've been posting since mid 2010. I even list the links to previous years. I've shared lots of tips & such over the years, including expanding the KEY. You will have to back up to the April calendar for the KEY. At Running Branch Marina on Lake Limestone, they nicknamed me "Catfish". On the Texas Fishing Forum, I am "Catfish Lynn". You do not have to be a member to read anything, But to post anything, you need to be a member. I even know of two Guides that use My Calendar.
Almost forgot, yes, I'm way over here in sort of central Texas metroplex- Aggieland, home of TAMU or Texas A&M University. I live about 16 miles NE of Bryan, just before the Navasota River (right down the road 1.5 miles). Lake Limestone is about an hours drive upstream (on the road, not the river, to clarify).
Oh, "covered wagons" (armadillos) taste like pork. That has been about 1980 or 1981, before I heard that they might be carriers of leprosy. Lot of work to get the meat out of the "half shell" though.
