Based on an email feed, Joel Skousen has a lot to say about this, and will undoubtedly comment on it in his upcoming WAB. He tags another prominent LDS leader as playing a significant role in this LDS/Chinese 'rapprochement'.

Looking forward to it. Hopefully Paul Jensons show is up and running on Friday and I will catch the brief on Friday also. This is going to be interesting. And only a couple of days before General Conference.

Actually, I should have realized Joel is not going to comment on Church-related issues in his Brief. However, I don't think he would mind me paraphrasing what he said in an email for which I was on the copy list.

Namely:

He mentioned President Hinckley hosting Chinese leaders several times and praising them on top of it. He also said Hinckley told the GAs a couple of times in the '90s that we would not be involved in a war with Russia or China.
