Incredible Resource - All University of Utah Secret Society Members, All in One Place. For the Low, Low Price of... FREE

Post by endlessQuestions »

All,

Someone decided this is important enough to them and our church that they would compile a list of all the secret society members from the University of Utah from 1911 to 1970.

The resource isn't totally finished, but I feel like it's ready for public viewing. We filled out the latest years so people can look and see if their Stake Presidents, Mission Presidents, Patriarchs, Temple Presidents, etc, are secret society members that undoubtedly participated in the types of things we read about in the Sigma Chi "secrets" document.

I'll be taking this and formatting it a bit differently so I can write a script that will give us some statistics (anyone wonder how many Romneys joined secret societies at the U since 1911?). But you can just CTRL + F and search a name for your purposes.

Here's the temporary link. I'll find a permanent home for it soon:

We need to start a website that you can easily see all this info with an easy search function. Not just university professors and students, but anyone in a prominent position in society.

Maybe like:

Of particular note, here is Russell M. Nelson in the junior class of 1945

https://collections.lib.utah.edu/detail ... t_i=753542

And here he is 3 times on one page regarding debate club (otherwise known as sophistry):

https://collections.lib.utah.edu/detail ... t_i=753542

And here he is winning the quartet competition with his Black Supper brothers from Sigma Chi:

https://collections.lib.utah.edu/detail ... t_i=753542

And Russell Nelson acting as the "Speaker" of the legistlative assembly:

https://collections.lib.utah.edu/detail ... t_i=753542

Wanna know what they were talking about?

"Dr. Maler, debate coach from BYU and
Dr. Myer, debate coach from <bad copy/paste>,
listen intently while the debaters discuss
an “International Police Force” and
pass bills against “racial prejudice.”

Remember how Wendy was telling us he can do all those things he's wanted to for all those years? She wasn't joking!

Presenting the Indian Legend of 1945 - this seems like something I would cancelled for these days. Kids back then... ;)

https://collections.lib.utah.edu/detail ... t_i=753542

What exactly is a "Censored Humbug"? And how is it possible he didn't win the award for "Most Fulsome Junior of 1945"? I demand a recount!

https://collections.lib.utah.edu/detail ... t_i=753542

A full page spread for both he and Dantzel:

https://collections.lib.utah.edu/details?id=753445

https://collections.lib.utah.edu/details?id=753444

So why, if he was "elected" to the honorary society of Skull and Bones during his junior year, is his picture not on this page? It's on every other page of the yearbook, it seems:

https://collections.lib.utah.edu/details?id=753471

Here's our happy couple at a dance. Please recognize that this is before Russell and Dantzel got serious about the Church (this picture was taken a few months before they got married in the Salt Lake Temple, so the dress makes sense):

https://collections.lib.utah.edu/details?id=753399

Looks like he got demoted from President to Vice-President of Sigma Chi (President in 1944, VP in 1945 - and I'm just joking, guys. Lighten up!)

Actually, there seems to be some confusion regarding time frames. He claims to have been elected President of Sigma Chi in 1944:

"University life was wonderful and successful. On April 3, 1944, I was elected president of the Sigma Chi fraternity. I was also later elected to the honorary societies of Skull and Bones in the junior year, Owl and Key in the senior year, the Beehive Honorary Society in the senior year, and at graduation time to the honorary scholastic socie- ties of Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Beta Kappa. I was awarded my B.A. degree in June commencement of 1945, and there on hand was Dant- zel, along with our dear parents, brothers, sisters, and other relatives who always did so much to encourage me. Dantzel got her bachelor’s degree a year later in 1946.

By virtue of adding to the normal class loads, I was able to meet all the requirements for admission to medical school and was accepted for the class to begin on September 12, 1944."

https://archive.org/details/from-heart- ... d+Bones%22

But in the 1944 yearbook, it doesn't list him as an officer, or anyone else for that matter.

Then in 1945 it shows somebody else as President, and him as VP.

https://collections.lib.utah.edu/details?id=753430

Then in 1946 it shows him as President:

https://collections.lib.utah.edu/details?id=751883

So, unless he went from Prez to VP to Prez, we've got a problem. Not saying it didn't happen, just pointing out the facts.

Also, he's on the record saying he started medical school in 1944, but is in the Utonian as a junior in 1945, and a senior getting his B.A. in 1946 (cap and gown picture). It was different times back then, but could you really get into medical school without a B.A. in the 1940s?

Pretty confusing stuff.

EDIT: If he was in medical school in 1944, he missed the picture for the Medical Students Association:

https://collections.lib.utah.edu/detail ... t_i=734898

Look at the names on that picture, though. Interesting.

I hope that's the royal "we", InfoWarrior.

You're talking about guys like this, though, right?

https://collections.lib.utah.edu/details?id=730640

That would be Bill Marriott and Richard Winder.

Winder's wife was General Relief Society President from 1984-1990 until they released her in 1990 so he could be the mission President in Czechoslovakia. They are in Beverly's book, but she never names him for some reason. Sister Winder was also a secret society member, as she attended the U and was a part of Alpha Chi Omega and Lambda Delta Sigma.

Good times.

Speaking of Marriott, his real name is John Willard Marriott, Jr. He just goes by Bill.

Guess who's all over Maricopa County records?

https://recorder.maricopa.gov/recdocdat ... oc4=&doc5=

Now, these guys were hotel magnates, so I suppose you'd expect to find them here.

Could be a different John W. Marriott, too.

And I don't have time to go through all the records.

Maybe somebody else does, though. Who knows?

I didn't know Gordon Gee was Skull and Bones, but I can't say that I'm surprised.

Looks like Bill Jr.'s grandma married Reed Smoot at some point, and was in secret societies herself. Are we getting the picture yet?

I imagine people will have similar reactions to others as well.

We have been fully infiltrated.

Period.

Full stop.

Now, what do we do about it?

Maybe it was a family business, because there's a "Howard Gee" as well.

Richard Winder was a dairy farmer in Granger, Utah back in my primary days. Wonder Dairy had a bunch of milk trucks as they did home deliveries. He was our bishop and my mother and sister Winder were friends.

Bishop Winder was my favorite bishop - probably because he was the first bishop I could remember.
