Interesting story on KSL today talking about teenagers doing dumb things similar to the much covered Tide Pod challenge. This time teenagers are following a tik tok trend to boil chicken in NyQuil and a few other drugs, or to do the "Benedryl Challenge" by taking several Benadryl pills to induce hallucinations.
This is what one expert said ...
This quote was in regards to teenagers eating laundry soap, or purposely overdosing, in other words it is about kids doing stupid things. Kids have always done stupid things, that is not the interesting part to me. It it more interesting that experts cry about teenagers ability to make decisions. The teenage brain isn't fully developed, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. In fact the prefontal cortex, which manages rational thought, problem-solving and consequences, doesn't fully develop until the mid-20s. That's why teens and young adults are often impulsive and more prone to act without considering the ramifications, the Academy said.
"Kids won't necessarily stop to consider that laundry detergent is a poison that can burn their throats and damage their airways. Or that misusing medications like diphenhydramine (Benadryl) can cause serious heart problems, seizures and coma," warned the American Academy of Pediatrics on its website.
"What they will focus on is that a popular kid in class did this and got hundreds of likes and comments," the American Academy of Pediatrics website states. "Social media rewards outrageous behavior, and the more outrageous, the bigger the bragging rights."
Considering the massive impact of social media on teenage behavior, how can parents and caregivers keep their children from participating in such challenges?
But why then do the "experts", including some medical associations promote the transgender movement among kids? Kids who's brains are not fully developed, kids who can't recognize long term consequences, kids that will do almost anything to get a social media "like".
