Shalom! Alaska is, indeed, a big place. We live in Wasilla, so just a stone's throw from Palmer. Palmer is quite beautiful, although I am not always on board with the politics there. I have never listened to those, although I have heard of Radio Free Palmer. I listen to a lot of podcasts. Primarily the only radio I listen to is to and from work or town. Are you familiar with Palmer?BeNotDeceived wrote: ↑September 18th, 2022, 7:52 amWelcome.AkalAish wrote: ↑September 15th, 2022, 9:06 pm Shalom!
My name is Yered, and I am an ordained rabbi who lives in Alaska. I love lively (respectful) and heartfelt theological discussions and meeting interesting people, so here I am. I look forward to getting to know all of you. May the Holy One bless and keep you.
Can I be reduced to bullet points? Perhaps...let us give it a try.
1. I am not fond of contractions.
2. I am a connoisseur of Oreos.
3. I am never sarcastic.
4. I am a father.
5. I am an educator.
6. I am not kind when I have to share sushi with others.
7. I am a collector of antiquity.
8. I never tire of the rain.
9. I am a moose and caribou hunter.
10. I am a mycologist by choice.
11. I do not do favorites.
12. I have been to Utah.
13. I am not here to contend, convert, or change anyone's mind about anything. I barely keep my own mind in check.
There are a few.

Have you listened to KNBA or Radio Free Palmer?
Alaska is a big place, can you be a bit more specific?

Yered,
I very much look forward to reading your take on whatever subjects you may take an interest in.
Your name is new to my experience. I find names to be one of those things that may contain valued treasures. My wife was only one of four people to have her name when she was born on 411. It means Heavenly Mist in Hawaiian, and has stoked my appreciation of music heard on KNBA every Sunday AM. Next up will be the truck stop guy, followed by DJ Vic. Radio Free Palmer is spinning up Saturday mornings in similar fashion. All good with volunteer DJs!
I moved to my home on the Farm Loop, just in time to ride out the 7.0 in 2018. Fortunately my home suffered only minimum damage, and by moving here we missed out on a cat 5 typhoon that destroyed my tower on Saipan. Indeed the beauty here is unmatched, as one reporter put it, it's like going to Middle Earth in the Lord of the Rings. Google says you name means descendant which is key to the whole Davidic Servant debate that rages on here from time to time.
It ebbs, but it doesn't flow. dbnp

Off of KGB here. Wasilla seems to be...the place through which you travel on your way to somewhere else. AND...the Valley is getting far too crowded for my liking. My wife, daughter and I spent a few days in Cordova recently. That seven hour ferry ride across Prince William Sound is simply lyrical. It writes itself. I believe I am familiar with the host of Radio Free Palmer, if I am not mistaken.BeNotDeceived wrote: ↑September 18th, 2022, 2:14 pmAkalAish wrote: ↑September 18th, 2022, 9:38 amShalom! My name was chosen by my mother, seemingly on a whim. I do not know that she was familiar with its connection to B'reshit, but she may have been. I shall have to inquire.
I am intrigued by any debate to do with Melech David. That sounds truly fascinating.
Be well and blessed, my friend.
Shalom

Welcome!
Many, myself included, delight in intellectual gathering of thoughts... often in the form of off-tangent debates. I do appreciate your list; very insightful.
I honestly attempt to avoid sarcasm here because one cannot denote off-set humor vs open rudeness in written words.
It is refreshing to see your post

I've been to a few towns in Alaska--beautiful country.
Good on ya for supporting your wife in labor!
You have a better way to bookmark websites?
I hope my attempted wit are not misconstrued as sarcasm.
But seriously:
7. What of antiquity do you collect?
10. With your knowledge of mycology, do you forage? garden?
12. What and/or who have you visited where you've been in Utah?
Otherwise, there is a wide variety of participants here. How would you describe your familiarity with Latter-day Saint doctrine; scripture, particularly the Book of Mormon; and practice?

Your wit is much appreciated, my friend. Jews happen to excel at self-deprecation. (Be very careful to read that last word. )ParticleMan wrote: ↑September 20th, 2022, 4:11 pmShalom!AkalAish wrote: ↑September 15th, 2022, 9:06 pm Shalom!

Antiquity? Mostly books and odds and ends. A few coins, although that is not strictly my thing. Nothing of tremendous value. I would describe some of the items as extremely old and interesting. At least to me. And I am the one that matters. Not to mention that I am unanimous in that.
Mycology, for me, encompasses all things from science to art. Edibles (no, not that kind) are of great importance to me, as well. I dabble at cookery and when I am able to construct and shape a meal entirely from items that I have foraged and hunted or fished, I am right as rain. I do garden as well. It sounds impressive, except that many Alaskans have gardens/green houses.
I have visited St. George as well as Salt Lake City and found them to be both delightful and pleasing to the eye.
