The main problem, especially in the UK, is that a lot of productive farmland is being built on. I have this happening near me. I'd rather they built on brownfield sites first before swallowing up farmland.

There are vast and huge tracts of unused land here in Utah.

But. There is no water. No services, no people, no stores, no nothing. So no, you could NOT live there.

The population of this world is very unevenly distributed. Take Asia for example... there are some parts which are way overpopulated, especially around coastal parts of India, China etc. But then there are vast areas esp. in the former USSR and western China which have hardly any people living in them.

Same in the USA - parts of the eastern seaboard are overpopulated but some parts out west are the opposite. Even in a tiny state like Hawaii, some areas are densely occupied and others wilderness depending on where you are.

Part of the problem here is the restrictive planning laws. Although designed to conserve and preserve landscapes etc, the knock-on effect is that they drive up land values.
I live in a reasonably picturesque English village where planning laws are very strict. However, the paradox is that the beautiful stone cottages and quaint homes were all built 200 years ago without any planning restrictions. Left to their own devices people tend be able to create beauty in form and structure without it being dictated to by some local government lacky.

I admit I had to look this up - pretty small island. I guess everyone could fit on the island - standing room only? and then someone in the middle has to use the bathroom...

I did a similar study - and found that if you grouped everyone on the planet into families of 4, you could put the entire earth's population in an area the size of Texas / Oklahoma / Arkansas, and give them all 1/4 acre and a house.

The earth is not overpopulated. Greedy people and tyrants are the problem.

As dry and remote as the land you speak of is, it is mostly what the Native Americans have had to live on for a few hundred years.

There is a reservoir in NE Utah called Starvation. The ranchers named the area starvation a hundred years ago because it took so many acres to feed just one cow. People in the city are consumers. They produce nothing. They are parasites.

It won't be long now before people realize that they should have put some thought into a little food production. A greenhouse works even in the worst climate. A few open range chickens can keep you alive if you can control the predators.

When people decide to contribute nothing, but want "society" to provide their needs, they are socialists. That is of the devil.

Will you let them have your food?

I might trade 3 bowls of soup for a new diesel 4x4. I might give you a deer I shot for your healthy horse. Oh, you invested in Big Pharma? How is that working for you? You have a doctorate in socialism? That's nice. Eat that. Well, I could use a little help around here. But it requires 100% loyalty. If it drops down to 99%, I don't need you any more.

You voted for Biden? You have 30 seconds to disappear before I separate your spirit from your body.

We are not over populated if people were not parasites. But if people leave food production to someone else, they may wake up with a shortage.

What could you do with 1/4 an acre of land, Apart from a decent sized garden tho, and MAYBE a few chickens? I grew up in a 1/3 acre plot in the suburban Texas. We had a small garden and a small area for grapes, and a couple fig trees, but it wasn't enough to feed us regularly; just to provide us with the occasional snack of green beans, strawberries, and a few other fruits and veggies. Coulda done a bit more if we didn't put a pool in, but I doubt 1/4 an acre would normally be enough to support yourself. Not without other ways to get food, money, etc.

There's a fun and very informative book I got a couple years ago -

Mini Farming: Self-Sufficiency on 1/4 Acre Paperback – Illustrated, April 1, 2010
by Brett L. Markham

It gives a ton of ideas, some of which we've implemented. I don't think anyone could grow or make everything they need on 1/4 acre, but that's where bartering, trading, etc. comes in. Another reason not to live in a city/town - having grass all around your house, when it could be a decent sized orchard (dwarf fruit trees are awesome!), a massive garden, and a chicken flock - maybe even a couple of goats for cheese, milk, etc. If we were "allowed" to dig up all the grass in our front yard - yowza! we could grow FAR more food than we would be able to eat (we already do with some veggies, just with our backyard garden). Yet another reason I can't wait to get out of here and find somewhere free to live.

The quarter acre in mudflap's example only requires the size of Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. Combined, I imagine. The whole entire rest of the earth would be vacant. There is plenty of room to grow 10 times.

But it doesn't work if they are all parasites.

I've mixed feelings about it. I think our architecture reflects both our technology and degeneracy nowadays.

Ireland is kind of the opposite. In some places, you've got beautiful views wrecked by some gombeen man's idea of Southfork (the house in Dallas). Some British towns have been totally trashed by bad architecture and not just new towns.
