But yet it was steerage and by the 1930s the renamed “tourist class” that made the profits for the steamship companies and not the tiny handful of rich first class passengers. Even in the case of first class passengers the steam ships were always going to have the advantage of being able to carry many more passengers than any airship ever would be capable of. Airships while very large are also mostly gas filled bags unable to hold passengers or cargo. Cargo was yet another advantage the the steamships had, and to some degree still have, over any aircraft. The rich could quite literally, and did so, bring a car back to the states with them on a ship.

While it is true that you could fly an airship to Chicago from Hamburg it would not be practical to do do. You would need to land and refuel in New York and as we saw all to well landing an airship was a dicey bit of work. The Hindenburg was far from the only airship to meet its end in such a fashion. Even more problematic however is that over land you are now competing with trains.

In the 1930’s you could take the 20th Century Limited, an all sleeper overnight train from New York to Chicago in 16 hours and weather would have no effect on your trip no airship or even a car could do that then or now. Even today Amtrak’s Lake Shore Limited which makes many more stops would and is still faster than driving or any airship transit ever would be.
